JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

We are searching for Mechanical Engineering Support Specialist to join our Experimental Support Department at the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State University. ARL’s purpose is to research and develop innovative solutions to challenging scientific, engineering, and technology problems in support of the Navy, the Department of Defense (DoD), and the Intel Community (IC).

 

You Will:

  • Select, recommend, and procure parts
  • Fabricate mechanical test hardware and hydraulic systems
  • Inspect mechanical parts for dimensional tolerance compliance
  • Calibrate precision instrumentation and equipment
  • Fabricate and assemble mechanical system prototypes
  • Assemble complex test set-ups using standard and non-standard equipment
  • Assist with developing and writing detailed assembly procedures
  • Assist with conducting tests as well as the collection, compilation, analysis, and documentation of test data

Additional responsibilities for higher-level position includes:

  • Provide operational training to lower level staff
  • Experience developing and writing assembly/operating procedures
  • Experience troubleshooting complex equipment problems and repair or oversee repairs to completion

This position can be filled as a Level 2 or 3 depending on your education and experience. Typical requirements include an Associate’s Degree in an Engineering or Science discipline; 2+ years related experience for a Level 2. Additional experience and/or education are required for higher-level positions.

Required skills and experience include:

  • Proficiency with mechanical drawings and geometric tolerance
  • Proficiency operating machine shop tools and precision measurement equipment
  • Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office programs

Preferred skills and experience include:

  • Active government security clearance
  • Previous success with collaborations in a diverse, multi-disciplinary, team-oriented culture
  • Experience in the use and calibration of instrumentation such as thermocouples, pressure transducers, flow meters, and accelerometers
  • Experience with fabrication of hydraulic plumbing systems including use of various tube fittings such as Swagelok
  • Experience assembling prototype models and complex mechanical assemblies with adherence to procedures
  • Experience developing and writing assembly procedures
  • Familiarity with Siemens NX, Solid Works, or other similar CAD programs

Your working location will be fully on-site, located in State College, PA.
