Master Thesis – Innovative Electrolyzer Concept for the Electrochemical Reduction of CO2 to Formic Acid

Your Job:

In order to reduce CO2 emissions the development of sustainable production processes based on ‘Power-to-X’ (P2X) technologies are an attractive and promising approach. By developing a technology to recycle CO2 and to create a new feedstock for industry (CO2 valorization) the CO2 economy cycle should be closed. Formic acid is one possible product for the electrochemical reduction of CO2 and is a relevant base chemical of great importance. Your tasks in detail:

  • Investigation of the influence of individual components and operating parameters on the performance of the electrochemical cell.
  • Fabrication of gas diffusion electrodes
  • Electrochemical measurements (CP, CA, LSV, PEIS, etc.)
  • Product analysis by ion chromatography and gas chromatography

Your Profile:

  • Ongoing master studies in chemistry, chemical engineering or similar
  • Basic knowledge in electrochemistry
  • First practical experience with electrochemical measurements is a plus
  • Motivated and independent working style
  • Good written and oral communication skills in German or English

Our Offer:

We work on the very latest issues that impact our society and are offering you the chance to actively help in shaping the change! We support you in your work with:

  • An interesting and socially relevant topic for your thesis with future-oriented themes
  • Ideal conditions for gaining practical experience alongside your studies
  • An interdisciplinary collaboration on projects in an international, committed and collegial team
  • Excellent technical equipment and the newest technology
  • Qualified support through your scientific colleagues
  • The chance to independently prepare and work on your tasks
  • Flexible working hours as well as a reasonable remuneration
  • A large research campus with green spaces, offering the best possible means for networking with colleagues and pursuing sports alongside work
  • Flexible work (location) arrangements, e.g. working from home
