Position Overview

The Schulich School of Engineering is currently seeking a Full-time Regular Marketing Advisor.

The marketing and communications team at the Schulich School of Engineering is currently seeking a full-time regular Marketing Advisor. Reporting to the Director, Marketing and Communications, the Marketing Advisor will play an important role in enhancing the brand and reputation of Schulich. They will be responsible for managing Schulich’s website, creating email marketing campaigns and developing compelling print and digital assets using UCalgary and Schulich’s brand standards.

The Marketing Advisor will work closely with communicators on the team to support the marketing and communicators needs of the faculty. Additionally, the Marketing Advisor will collaborate with engineering faculty members, the Engineering Career Centre and the Dean’s office leadership and staff to bring the Schulich marketing and communications strategy to life.

This position will work on tactical and strategic projects with minimal guidance from the Director, Marketing and Communications. They will be collaborative, solutions-focused and have a proven track record of building strong relationships with partners. The Marketing Advisor will manage their time independently while assuming leadership of small to mid-sized marketing and communications projects. The successful candidate must be tech-savvy, with the ability to learn new systems, processes and technologies that emerge in marketing and communications.

The Marketing Advisor is responsible for three key areas of marketing and communications at Schulich: website management, email marketing and the visual brand. They will be creating marketing tactics that reach a variety of audiences including faculty, staff, current students, prospective students, the UCalgary campus, alumni and the broader engineering community. The successful candidate will have experience using metrics and reporting to enhance effectiveness of their work and guide decision making.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

Website Management:

  • Using Drupal, review existing pages and recommend revisions (content or structural).
  • Build new web pages as needed.
  • Develop and monitor effective benchmarking techniques for measuring the impact of Schulich web pages. Analyze, review and report monthly on the email marketing metrics in an effort to maximize results.
  • Write and edit content for web.
  • Coordinate graphic assets, photos and video to accompany the web pages.
  • Respond to faculty and staff requests for website changes.

Email Marketing:

  • Build email campaigns and monthly newsletters in Marketo, UCalgary’s email marketing platform.
  • Responsible for the administration, optimization, maintenance and troubleshooting of Marketo for Schulich. This includes escalating technical issues the Digital Experience team as needed.
  • Develop and monitor effective benchmarking techniques for measuring the impact of email marketing campaigns. Analyze, review and report monthly on the email marketing metrics in an effort to maximize results.
  • Write and edit content for newsletters and other email marketing campaigns.

Visual Brand:

  • Liaise with graphic designers to create print and digital collateral.
  • Review swag orders placed by partners around the school to ensure they are brand-compliant.
  • Place orders with the UCalgary print shop as needed.
  • Ensure Schulich’s brand standards are up-to-date and adhered to throughout the faculty.
  • Ensure compliance with and advocate for UCalgary’s brand standards and guidelines.

Team & Stakeholder Relations:

  • Responsible for respond to all emails submitted to the general Schulich marketing and communications inbox or redirect as needed.
  • Liaise with partners in Schulich to understand their desired outcomes, goals and objectives and provide recommendations on the right marketing strategies and tactics required to meet those goals
  • Work closely with members of the Communications and Marketing and Strategic Operations teams to develop streamlined processes to support sustained growth in TI programs and events, and across our strategic priorities.
  • Manage complex issues and challenging interpersonal interactions with composure and diplomacy.
  • Act as a key liaison between the Schulich marketing and communications team and the Digital Experience team by attending professional development sessions and meetings as needed.
  • This position may occasionally include other marketing and communications tasks as assigned by the Director, Marketing and Communications. Examples include: social media management, event support, media relations, etc.

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Related undergraduate degree is required (Communications, Marketing, Public Relations, Journalism, English or Business Administration).
  • Three to five years of experience in communications, marketing and/or public relations.
  • Excellent knowledge of content management systems such as Drupal.
  • Excellent knowledge of emailing marketing, specifically Marketo.
  • An eye for design and layout, and the ability to work directly with graphic designers.
  • Working knowledge of UCalgary brand standards and/or experience working within corporate brand standards to produce print and digital assets.
  • Exceptional writing, copyediting and storytelling skills with high attention to detail.
  • Experience planning and executing photo and video shoots.
  • Strong project management skills with the ability to manage multiple, competing priorities in a fast-paced environment while producing high-quality work.
  • Knowledge of marketing and communications metrics and reporting, and their importance in supporting business objectives.
  • Experience using the Adobe Creative Suite including InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop would be considered an asset.
  • Understanding of paid social media, including strategy and execution, would be considered an asset.
  • An understanding of the UCalgary campus would be considered an asset.
