At the University of Southampton, we have an exciting opportunity for a Marine Science Teaching Technician to join our team of core technicians within the School of Ocean and Earth Science. 

The School of Ocean and Earth Science is situated within the National Oceanography Centre Southampton, providing a truly unique and interdisciplinary working environment. Our technical team plays a pivotal role in helping our students and researchers better understand our dynamic planetary system and address the key societal challenges that effect our blue planet that we call home. From managing our research vessel Callista, to running our Research Aquarium, laboratories, workshops, and facilities, our technicians are an integral part of everything that we do. 

The role 

As a core technician, you will work alongside a team of highly skilled and dedicated technicians, academic and professional services colleagues, to deliver a high-quality educational experience for students. Within this varied role, you will provide specialist technical support for marine science teaching activities in the field and laboratory, as well as supporting specialist analytical chemistry services within our in-house Nutrient and Carbonate Analysis Facility.

This role is based at Waterfront Campus in National Oceanography Centre Southampton, it’s easily accessible via direct public transport, situated within walking distance of Southampton’s vibrant city centre. 

About you

This wide ranging role will require excellent communication skills and an ability to prioritise tasks and manage service expectations within a constantly changing work environment. You will be a highly independent worker, with the ability to plan and prioritise your own workload. 

You will have a skill level equivalent to achievement of HNC, A-Level, NVQ3 in a STEM subject, with proven work experience acquired in a relevant technical support role, including an understanding of technical processes relating to analytical chemistry and its application in the marine sciences. A degree in a scientific discipline and/or experience working in offshore, coastal, or estuarine environments will be highly desirable. 

Your basic hours will be 35 hours per week, Monday-Friday, but you may be required to work some weekends and bank holidays depending on the needs of the business. 

A full driving license is an essential requirement for this role, as you will be transporting students, staff, and equipment into the field.
