The Manager, Yungkurrinthi Student Engagement works under the broad direction of the Manager, Office of Indigenous Strategy and Engagement (OISE) and leads in the planning, development, and implementation of student programs within Yungkurrinthi Student Engagement (YSE) supported from the Australian Governments Indigenous Student Success Program.
The Manager YSE leads a team of staff who support Indigenous undergraduate and postgraduate students across SA & NT throughout their university learning-cycles, in conjunction with College and Portfolio support areas, and provides advice and monitors the Indigenous Student Success Targets across Colleges, reporting outcomes to the Pro Vice Chancellor Indigenous.

Key Position Responsibilities

  • Planning, developing, and managing enhancement and success strategies and programs within OISE and ensure these are delivered across the Indigenous student learning-cycle, including transition, enrolment, progression, completion, alumni, and employment.

  • Providing effective leadership and coordination to a team of staff who support Indigenous student success.

  • Managing the Yungkurrinthi Student Engagement program budget, including scholarships and tutoring program.

  • Leading, promoting and monitoring the Indigenous Student Success Targets across Colleges and Portfolios and provide regular update reports to Pro Vice Chancellor Indigenous.

  •  Undertaking case management by supporting students, promoting the needs of Indigenous students to senior managers in the Colleges/Portfolios, and working with both staff and students to resolve matters in timely ways.

  • Fostering relationships within College/Portfolio student services areas and holding membership on key College/Portfolio committees that enhance student success.

  • Leading, training, and supervising a team of dynamic staff, and supporting staff development through the annual Performance Review and Development cycle.

  • Representing the Pro Vice Chancellor Indigenous and Yungkurrinthi Student Engagement on internal university-wide committees and groups, and external community groups to ensure student success and wellbeing is at the core of university initiatives, where appropriate.

  • Contributing to annual reports and documents that relate to Indigenous student success programs and outcomes.

  • Any other responsibilities in line with the level of the position as assigned by the Supervisor and/or the University.

Key Position Capabilities

  • A tertiary qualification in a relevant discipline and/or equivalent experience.

  • Knowledge and understanding of issues faced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in tertiary education.

  • Knowledge, understanding and awareness of the diversity of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and an ability to work in culturally appropriate and sensitive ways.

  • Demonstrated strong leadership skills in order to lead a team towards the successful delivery and improved outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students at Flinders University.

  • Expertise in, or capacity to provide complex advice and support to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students.

  • Extensive experience in strategic planning, developing, and coordinating Indigenous programs and activities.

  • Demonstrated experience is managing program budgets and providing reports.

  • Demonstrated experience interpreting data and reviewing progress and reporting on outcomes and providing recommendations for improvement.

  • Demonstrated high level oral communication and interpersonal skills including the ability to build rapport with staff, Indigenous students, their families, and communities.

  • High level organisation, administrative and report writing skills, including attention to details and proven record of managing competing priorities.

  • Extensive experience in strategic planning, developing, and coordinating Indigenous student programs and activities in the education or tertiary sector (desirable).

  • Understanding of Indigenous Higher Education policy that informs Indigenous programs in the tertiary sector (desirable) .

Prescribed Conditions for Employment

This position is an identified position for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people only, pursuant to Section 56 EEO Act (SA) 1984, and Flinders University’s Indigenous Workforce Strategy 2022 – 2025.

  • A valid National Police Certificate which is satisfactory to the University will also be required before the successful applicant can commence in this position.
