Duties and Responsibilities:

Working closely with the Associate Dean (Research & International) on a day-to-day basis, the Manager, Research Services & Initiatives is responsible for contributing to the development of strategic planning for research initiatives and services in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. Contributions would include developing research plans, directing the support of large-scale and/or strategic grant applications and prestigious awards nominations, as well as contributing to and overseeing the full suite of grant applications. They are additionally responsible for developing and enhancing pre-award research administration processes and acting as liaison with the various research support services provided under the Office of the Vice-President (Research & International) as well as other offices on campus (including Human Resources, Business Office, etc.). They are responsible for managing and guiding the research services team within the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences.

Qualifications:

The incumbent must possess the following qualifications:
• Knowledge of common theories, methods, and topics within FASS disciplines (ie: the arts or social sciences)
• Knowledge of research and sector trends, project management, and business development
• Knowledge of research funding applications and programs, policies, procedures, and processes
• Knowledge of relevant governing legislation, collective agreements, policies and procedures
• Knowledge of office as well as the broader university academic units, departments, and divisions
• Knowledge of office productivity software/databases, discipline-specific software, enterprise software such as banner, technology devices and internet competency
• Knowledge of cultural competency and diversity in a business context

Education and Experience:

The above is normally acquired through the completion of:
• Doctoral degree (preferably in a discipline represented in FASS—i.e.: the arts or social sciences)
• Minimum of 4 years of progressive experience in a research environment
• Minimum 1 year of management and leadership experience

Health and Safety Requirements

This position is regularly required to work on campus in person. In the event of a public health emergency or a health and safety issue, it is possible that you may be required to work temporarily remotely due to public health orders, directives and/or health and safety requirements. If this happens, you will work with your direct manager to set up a remote work environment including discussing appropriate technology and requirements. You are required to follow all University policies and directives, including to set up a safe and confidential workspace in a remote location and ensure all Carleton property (intellectual and other) is safeguarded. If required to work remotely, you will be notified by your manager when working full time physically onsite will resume.
