This position will work a hybrid schedule which includes a combination of working both onsite at La Jolla and remote.

The Altman Clinical and Translational Research Institute (ACTRI) was established to provide education, training and infrastructure for clinical research in the San Diego area that encompasses four hospital systems, two universities and four biomedical research organizations. The ACTRI is under the direction of Gary S. Firestein, M.D. ACTRI’s vision is to translate scientific discoveries into improved health by delivering education, training and infrastructure for clinical research in the San Diego area and beyond. Gary S. Firestein, M.D., Mike Hogarth, M.D. and Davey Smith M.D. are the multi principal investigators on UC San Diego’s CTSA grant. The ACTRI functions under the direction of Gary S. Firestein, M.D., Director, and Senior Associate Vice Chancellor Health Sciences at UC San Diego.

Manager, Research Business Intelligence provides collaborative leadership and consultation, strategic planning, design, and facilitation, as well as effective program & team management within the ACTRI and as part of the overall SAVC portfolio. Responsible for managing/supervising the Program Support Office in ACTRI and the Business Intelligence Data Team in the Research Transformation Office. Applies broad range of professional experiences, expert knowledge, and industry best practices to large portfolio of complex, multidimensional projects & strategic efforts.

Functions as an advisor to ACTRI/SAVC leadership, unit directors, and cross-departmental stakeholders. Provides data-driven decision support to solve complex business problems. Plays a leading role in identifying and prioritizing key initiatives and continuous improvement efforts in alignment with the institution’s strategic and operational goals, objectives, and deliverables to advance clinical research at UCSD and partner institutions. Develops business cases to support enterprise-wide business intelligence and workflow management solutions.Works with team leads, consultants, project managers, and key ACTRI/SAVC personnel to assess complex organizational, procedural, and reporting issues. Demonstrates strong analytical and problem-solving skills in identifying desired and sustainable improvements. Understands business needs, both technical and non-technical, and implements best practice solutions in alignment with strategic goals. Develops strategic/tactical plans based on business data and subject matter expertise. Works with business and/or clinical units to understand and prioritize data and information requirements. Creates specifications for reports and analysis based on business needs and required/available data elements.

The Manager provides direct supervision to team leads, project managers, developers, and analysts to assure accountability and stewardship of department resources in compliance with departmental goals and objectives. Provides direction and guidance on project assignments and work prioritization in accordance with department’s project portfolio. Facilitates project communication and collaboration. Fosters a culture of active knowledge transfer within and across project teams and provides guidance to less experienced consultants and project members.Responsible for managing ACTRI data infrastructure and the resources necessary to automate processes and reports. Transforms data into actionable insights so unit leads can effectively measure, monitor, and manage their teams. Manages and works with a team that builds out our ACTRI data warehouse, creates data connections, performs ETL (extracts, transforms, and loads data), schedules data refreshes, integrates data, analyzes data, gathers requirements, creates data dictionaries, and generates dashboards utilizing business intelligence tools. Connects to internal and external data sources, utilizing APIs and linked servers. Leads the implementation process to connect new data sources and maintains existing data sources to meet growing customer demands. Designs, manages, and maintains reports and dashboards utilizing Python, SQL, and Tableau. Continually strives to optimize systems and performance. Tableau site administrator and system admin for ACTRI business intelligence tools.

Manages a team to provide reliable high level qualitative and quantitative data and trend analysis that supports the strategic planning and operational effectiveness across SAVC units and clinical research affiliate offices. Automates and simplifies data flows to perform complex analysis, dashboard creation, and provide executive support. Works to capture the entire clinical research process and connect key pieces in the information lifecycle to broadly enhance the UCSD portfolio and outcomes.

Supervises professionals providing direction and guidance on business intelligence solutions and program support. Coordinates department workflow, sets priorities, and assesses processes . Provides input on personnel matters and recommends improvements to department practices.Program Support Office Management: Responsible for managing the Program Support Office, which provides support across ACTRI, including administrative, organizational, operational, program management, project management, policy/procedure creation and management, and support for internal personnel functions.

Research Transformation & Business Intelligence Management: Responsible for managing the Business Intelligence Data Team in the Research Transformation Office. Applies Lean Six Sigma principles to continually improve clinical research processes. Analyzes and resolves business problems, interprets policies, and demonstrates solid subject matter knowledge. Independently makes strategic decisions for reports on new efforts while integrating into overall SAVC objectives. Collaborates with technical teams to identify opportunities to leverage state-of-the-art technology to enhance information management and streamline business operations. Serves as a resource on the development of complex analytics, data modeling, and reporting to meet desired business outcomes. Supervises implementation and rollout of training for business intelligence tools and processes. Other duties as assigned.

  • Nine years of related experience, education/training, OR an Bachelor’s degree in related area plus five years of related experience/training.

  • Demonstrated ability to supervise professional staff, assign work and manage competing priorities.

  • Strong knowledge of business intelligence principles, concepts and methodologies.

  • Knowledge of human resources practices and policies. Ability to monitor, address and document personnel and performance issues.

  • Ability to analyze information, think conceptually and formulate effective solutions.

  • Strong written and verbal communications skills. Ability to convey technical information in a clear, concise manner.

  • Advanced interpersonal skills to collaborate with clinical and technical professionals and business leaders.

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with senior management on operational and policy issues.

  • Ability to deliver presentations to large and / or diverse audiences.

  • Ability to train staff.

  • Proficient in all MS Office applications, BI / database applications and reporting tools.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $78,900 – $179,900 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $37.79 – $86.16

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
