| Job Summary | The Department of Biomedical Informatics (DBMI) seeks a highly skilled business manager. DBMI will undergo dramatic growth over the next several years with the recruitment of more than 10 new faculty members, expansion of its education and research programs, and transformation of its daily operations to support such growth. The business manager is at the core of these operations, contributing to the strategic vision and providing key leadership, direction, and management. Under minimal supervision, the business manager will be responsible for the department operations, pertaining to administrative, financial, personnel, and organizational functions. The incumbent will provide strategic support and leadership in planning, developing, and implementing new programs to advance the department mission and goals. The business manager will assist in evaluating current and proposed systems and procedures and recommend changes as necessary, assist in implementation of new administrative processes, and act as a catalyst between the department and its stakeholders and staff to ensure continuity and quality of service. This position is responsible for continuing the success of DBMI’s daily business practices and operations — and ushering in a new era of growth. |
| Responsibilities | 1. Develops and manages the DBMI’s budget, including preparing the annual budget submission to the School of Medicine (SOM), as well as monitors the appropriateness and effectiveness of the financial management of the research and education programs. Conduct multi-year forecasts of research and education expenses (mission-based accounting), revenue, and break-even points to develop a sustainable model for expected growth. 2. Forecasts, develops, and implements policies and procedures in the areas of customer service, staff management, and budgetary goals and objectives that are consistent with University of Utah’s policies. Analyzes process outcomes and workflows to ensure and identify efficiencies in productivity and savings. 3. Assures that HR and financial procedures and controls are in accordance with the University of Utah policies and practices. Provides ultimate oversight for hiring, compensation and equity, and performance management in addition to overseeing faculty recruitment efforts and retention, promotion, and tenure processes. 4. Oversees processes for increased productivity and growth, including implementing business strategies, evaluating department performances, and supervising employees through the development and/or presentation of educational programs and through on-going staff performance evaluations. Oversees recruitment, training, orientation, and professional development of division staff in support of accomplishing department goals and mission. 5. Develops departmental strategies for continuous quality improvement of staffing and training staff members proactively supporting the education and research programs and promotes new and existing education and research programs to internal and external stakeholders aligned with the evolving dynamics of education markets and extramural funding. 6. Ensures DBMI student and DBMI faculty researchers’ satisfaction by managing teams responsible of analyzing complaints, concerns and suggestions and providing appropriate follow-through. | Minimum Qualifications | Requires a Bachelor’s degree in a related area of assignment or equivalency and 4 years of progressively more responsible management experience. Background knowledge of assigned department’s area of specialization to analyze, plan and draw conclusions for recommendations to superiors. Demonstrated leadership skills in planning and directing employees and processes to effectively monitor and develop subordinates and to ensure the smooth operation of department. Completion of provided supervisory training within one year of employment may be required. Master’s degree in a related area may be preferred. Prior experience in forecasting return on investment on multiple years is preferred. Prior experience in budgeting multiple years of research and education is preferred. University of Utah experience, financial management experience, and research administration experience are strongly preferred. |
