  • Leadership and Management: Oversee and lead the Scientific Computing Facility (currently 7 employees), ensuring efficient operations and continuous development
  • Strategic Development: Devise and implement strategic plans to enhance the facility’s capabilities and expand its services in alignment with emerging research needs
  • Collaboration with Research Groups: Work closely with group leaders and scientists to understand their specific needs, offer expert guidance and develop tailored solutions to address scientific challenges
  • Resource Allocation: Manage the allocation of computing resources at the High-Performance Computing (HPC) facility, prioritizing based on project urgency and research needs
  • Technology Trends: Stay updated and remain curious about new trends and technologies in High-Performance Computing (HPC) and IT to continuously expand the facility’s expertise
  • Procurement and Compliance: Coordinate the acquisition of HPC hardware and software, manage licenses and ensure compliance with relevant policies and regulations
  • Service Optimization: Oversee and enhance services such as HPC application development, software support, custom hardware configurations and bioinformatics analyses
  • Documentation and Policies: Create and maintain documentation, including knowledge base articles, standard operating procedures and policies for HPC infrastructures
  • External Communication and Networking: Maintain effective communication with external partners, including Austrian and international research institutions and HPC communities

Qualifikation

  • Educational Background: Completed degree (preferably a PhD) in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field (e.g., Climate Science, Physics, Astrophysics)
  • Parallel Computing Expertise: Strong background in parallel computing, with experience in both CPU and GPU environments
  • Leadership Experience: Proven experience in leading and managing a high-performance or scientific computing unit, ideally within an international research institution
  • Resilience and Diplomacy: Strong interpersonal skills with a balanced and diplomatic approach, able to handle high-pressure environments
  • Communication Skills: Excellent communication skills, with the ability to convey complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders clearly and effectively
  • HPC System Administration: Several years of experience as an HPC system administrator or in a similar role and deep knowledge of parallel and cluster file systems such as BeeGFS, NFS, and ZFS, as well as familiarity with InfiniBand networks in HPC environments
  • Job Scheduling Tools: Hands-on experience with job schedulers such as SLURM or similar systems
  • Desirable Skills: While not mandatory, familiarity with bioinformatics tools and techniques, particularly in genomics and transcriptomics, is a plus
