About the Office for Research (Melbourne Law School)
The Office for Research is an administrative unit of Melbourne Law School that supports the Associate Dean (Research), the Director, Graduate Research and the Faculty Research and Law Library Committee

The Office for Research is responsible for the strategic and operational management of research at the faculty level and provides expertise and support services to staff and graduate researchers across Research Strategy and Planning, Research Development and Funding and the Graduate Research Degree Program.

About the Role
The MLS Academic Research Service Manager has responsibility for delivering and further developing an outstanding, pro-active reference and research service to support the scholarship and publication efforts of Melbourne Law School academic and research staff.

The Service also offers a program of sophisticated legal research training to student Research Assistants employed in the Law School

The MLS Academic Research Service Manager will lead the MLS Academic Research Service team, which comprises a Research Librarian and student Research Assistants, with support as needed from Law Library and other Research and Industry team members.

Responsibilities include:

  • Leading the MLS Academic Research Service team to provide high quality reference, research, information and current awareness services
  • Maintaining an awareness of Law faculty research and teaching interests, anticipating faculty information needs.
  • Providing sophisticated database and other legal training to Law School staff and faculty Research Assistants.

About You

You are an experienced manager with strong leadership skills, able to motivate and lead staff to achieve high levels of performance. You are able to demonstrate problem solving abilities and sound professional judgement, using your initiative to anticipate work requirements and parameters for projects, and allowing you to manage expectations. You have excellent time management skills, able to juggle multiple competing tasks and ensure all deadlines and objectives are met. Your excellent communication and interpersonal skills enable you to work with people at all levels of the organisation, as well as with stakeholders external to the organisation. You are able to evaluate and develop new initiatives for delivering research services, with a commitment to providing continuous improvement to services. 

You will also have:

  • A degree or graduate qualification in library, information science or information management.
  • Significant experience in performing and teaching sophisticated Australian, foreign, comparative and international legal research using print and online tools; and high level research database searching skills.
  • Demonstrated expert knowledge of legal materials.
