Job Description

The School of Geographical Sciences and Urban Planning is seeking a Management Intern to provide professional level administrative support to the Graduate Programs Support Services team assisting with general administration projects, research and analysis, procedural studies, and technical planning. The management intern collaborates with the Manager of Graduate Programs to gain working knowledge and experience related to department administration and project management.

Essential Duties

Serves in an intern capacity which may include the following duties and responsibilities:

  • Supports the planning, marketing, staging, tracking of attendance, and other tasks as assigned for events.
  • Coordinates the development and dissemination of communication, marketing, and promotional materials.
  • Conducts independent research of administrative or operational areas specific to the area of assignment.
  • Assembles and analyzes statistical data and makes interpretations for application to area of assignment.
  • Assists in development of new programs, policies or procedures; coordinates programs as assigned.
  • Facilitates the development of specialized administrative or technical projects in area of assignment.
  • Analyzes procedures and makes recommendations for improvement.
  • Maintains databases and prepares reports as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in a related field; OR, any equivalent combination of education and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of management principles and practices.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of program coordination.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of basic project management.
  • Experience in organizing resources and establishing priorities.
  • Experience in planning, organization, coordination of activities.
  • Experience in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.
  • Evidence of effective communication
  • Experience in using of personal computer and related software applications.

Working Environment

  • Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding, and manipulating a computer mouse
  • Required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work
  • Frequent bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds
  • Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts
  • Communicate to perform essential functions
  • Regular use of standard office equipment including, but not limited to: computer workstation/laptop(keyboard, monitor, mouse), printer, fax, calculator, copier, telephone and associated computer/technology peripherals

The School of Geographical Sciences and Urban Planning(SGSUP) is a major participant in the instructional and research activities of Arizona State University. We staff team of 19 supports 37 tenure/tenure-track faculty including three members of the National Academy of Sciences, over 1000 undergraduate majors (split between campus and online) and 200+ graduate students studying in one of five graduate degree programs (MA and PhD programs in Geography, a PhD in Urban Planning, a Masters in Urban and Environmental Planning and a Master of Advanced Studies in Geographical Information Systems(with more on the way) as well as graduate certificate programs in GIS and transportation. SGSUP has grown quickly in the past year, especially via online enrollment, and more new programs are due to launch on-campus and online in the next two years.
