Reporting to the Manager, Facilities Maintenance, the Maintenance Assistant assists in the preventative and corrective maintenance of building facilities, equipment and systems, as well as performs maintenance work orders.

Summary of Responsibilities:

  • Assist the Manager, Facilities Maintenance in the implementation of the university’s Preventative Maintenance Program for ventilation, heating, and cooling equipment and building systems
  • Carry out work orders, including minor repairs to facilities, and repairs relating to plumbing and electrical work, troubleshooting and problem solving as required, escalating to the Manager as needed
  • Liaise with the Work Request Coordinator regarding the status of work orders, prioritizing orders as required
  • Assist the Manager, Facilities Maintenance in the coordination of contractors involving all building systems, acting as point of contact for on-site contractors, where appropriate
  • In collaboration with the Manager, Facilities Maintenance and other Maintenance staff, carry out regular building inspections and related investigations
  • Respond to emergencies as required, including call-ins during off hours and weekends
  • Support the Manager, Facilities Maintenance in other related duties that contribute to the successful operation of the Facilities Maintenance work unit


  • Secondary school or equivalent, and a minimum of one (1) year of related work experience or equivalent
  • Knowledge of elevated work platform training and ladder safety, and fall arrest training
  • Familiarity with HVAC, heating systems, and preventative maintenance programs an asset
  • Demonstrated commitment to health and safety and knowledge of Occupational Health & Safety Act and other relevant legislation
  • Strong mechanical aptitude, familiarity with hand tools, and the ability to interpret drawings, manuals, parts catalogues and building plans
  • Familiarity with precision measuring instruments, and other electronic testing devices
  • Proficient oral and basic written communication skills; familiarity with Microsoft Office an asset
  • Must have demonstrated a high degree of reliability, and the ability to work independently and participate collaboratively in a team environment
  • A valid Ontario “G” class driver’s license is preferred

  • Able to work on shift and/or be on call in rotation in response to needs of the workplace 

Compensation: OPSEU Unit 1, Appendix A, Grade A3; $25.97 to $33.69 per hour

Hours of Work: Monday to Friday, for a total of 35 hours per week. This is a temporary contract expected to continue until December 4, 2024
