This M.S. student will contribute to a NASA-funded effort to develop better within-season yield and water use forecasting tools. The position will involve data assimilation of near-real-time evapotranspiration data into crop models to improve subseasonal forecast skill, and work with agricultural producers and organizations to better understand water use decision heuristics. The project will focus on northwestern Kansas with potential connections to Colorado and Nebraska.
The student will be supervised by Sam Zipper and housed in the Kansas Geological Survey, which is a research and service center in the University of Kansas.
Required Qualifications: (i) Bachelor’s degree in a water-related science or engineering discipline, (ii) experience with coding, preferably in python, and (iii) proficiency in oral and written communication in English.
Preferred Qualifications: (i) Experience with crop models such as AquaCrop-OS, (ii) experience with version control software such as git, (iii) demonstrated ability to work effectively in an interdisciplinary team, (iv) experience working with agricultural and/or water management communities.
