UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, is offering a full-time internship with the Inclusion Team of the UNHCR Representation for Central Europe in Budapest, Hungary.

Established in December 1950, UNHCR is a global organization dedicated to saving lives, protecting rights and building a better future for asylum seekers, refugees, returnees, internally displaced communities and stateless people. Every year, millions of men, women and children are forced to flee their homes to escape conflict and persecution. UNHCR currently operates in over 130 countries, using its long expertise to protect and care for millions.

Title: Livelihoods and Economic Inclusion Intern
Duty Station: Budapest, Hungary
Duration: 6 months
Contract Type: Internship

Start date: as soon as possible

Organizational context:

While UNHCR has been present in country since 1989 through its Representation for Central Europe the conflict in Ukraine and outflow of refugees has resulted in a need and opportunity for heightened engagement in Hungary. With millions of Ukrainians crossing into the country in the first year of the conflict and tens of thousands choosing to remain in country and apply for Temporary Protection, the scope of engagement of UNHCR Hungary significantly expanded. Currently, the office has eight national partners delivering shelter, inclusion, empowerment, and specialized protection services for refugees. In addition, UNHCR, as per its mandate, has established an inter–agency refugee coordination forum bringing diverse range of actors delivering assistance and appealing for funds under the Regional Refugee Response Plan for the Ukraine Situation.

UNHCR works to support refugees inclusion broadly, including both those with temporary protection status as well as those who are beneficiaries of international protection. UNHCR works with diverse stakeholders to support the inclusion of refugees in the national labour market, health care services, education and other national social protection services and mechanisms.

Despite an increasing number of refugees who can access the labour market, many refugees of working age are not employed or are in instable and/or seasonal contractual situations. Refugees encounter obstacles in securing livelihoods and employment due to the prevailing economic conditions in the country affecting the job market, as well as language and childcare barriers. Additionally, the lack of affordable housing and stable job opportunities further compounds the challenges they face.

Furthermore, refugee children face significant challenges in integrating into the Hungarian education system, mainly due to language barriers as well as experiencing bullying.
