Job Summary The Bowdoin College Library seeks an individual who is an experienced web designer and developer to support and advance the library’s website and its many web-based services. Reporting to the Associate Librarian for Digital Initiatives and Special Collections, the Library Web Services Developer is responsible for the design, development, organization, evaluation, and maintenance of the library’s web presence, including the website and mobile environment, and integrated web applications. As a member of the library’s Digital Initiatives Group (DIG), the Web Services Developer works closely with colleagues to develop and manage the library’s robust systems infrastructure. The ideal candidate for this position will be a skilled technician and creative problem-solver, who is innovative, collaborative, and service oriented.
Appointment as Library Web Services Developer and Head of Digital Initiatives may be considered for a qualified candidate with supervisory and management experience. In addition to the job duties of the Web Services Developer, this role would be responsible for the overall administration and strategic leadership of the library’s extensive suite of technology services. In particular, the Head of Digital Initiatives would manage the Digital Initiatives Group (DIG), including supervision of two staff, and would serve as a member of the Library Leadership Team, ensuring that technology is at the forefront of the library’s strategic planning.

This position:
· Serves as the Library’s webmaster, including creating and managing web content, coordinating projects, ensuring currency of information, and gathering usage statistics.
· Provides technical support for library services, processes, and special projects, and access to the library’s digital resources, including troubleshooting and resolving technological problems and communicating regularly with stakeholders and members of the College community.
· Coordinates work with DIG (Digital Initiatives Group) colleagues and regularly collaborates with a wide variety of individuals from the library, Information Technology, and other College departments.
· Works closely with content creators to migrate and organize their content in a meaningful way.
· Implements College policies and procedures for website structure, format, and accessibility and develops and implements library website policies and procedures.

Education/Skills Requirements Required:
· Bachelor’s degree; Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited library program or an advanced degree in a related discipline preferred.
· Proficiency with HTML and CSS, JavaScript, proxy software, administrative tasks at a Unix/Linux shell command line, and image editing applications.
· Knowledge of best practices and standards; familiarity with web content management systems, web accessibility principles, standards, and guidelines, and general network security issues and practices.
· Knowledge of current national trends in web organization and design, web usability standards and testing methods.
· Excellent communication, interpersonal, and creative problem-solving skills; the ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a rapidly changing environment; the ability to set priorities and manage time and multiple projects with competing deadlines; and a strong customer service orientation.
Preferred:
· Proficiency with Apache web server software, Bootstrap web framework, and programming languages such as XML, XSLT, SQL, Perl, and PHP.
Required for appointment as Library Web Services Developer and Head of Digital Initiatives: Excellent project management and organizational skills with aptitude for complex analytical and detailed work; knowledge of current and emerging digital library technology and applications.
Experience Requirements and/or Equivalents Required:
· Minimum of two years of direct experience in website management using HTML, CSS, content management software, and other web development tools.
· Experience with Photoshop or a similarly robust image editing application, troubleshooting back-end website issues, Google Analytics, Tag Manager, Search Console, and Programmable Search Engine.
Preferred:
· Academic library experience and/or experience supporting technology in a library setting.
· Experience with MySQL, EZproxy software, Springshare platform applications, WordPress multisite, and the Alma LSP.
· Familiarity with GitHub and experience with web APIs and developing web applications.
· Experience with graphic design and/or visual design principles.
Required for appointment as Library Web Services Developer and Head of Digital Initiatives: Supervisory and management experience.
Standard Work Days and Hours This is an exempt position requiring time commitment necessary to satisfactorily complete job requirements. Hours are primarily weekdays 8am to 5pm, however normal duties will require some weekend and evening work, and availability for emergency response to critical issues.
