What we want

The Library Specialist I is responsible for providing assistance for both the Annex and Evans Library Service Desks, Sunday – Thursday, 8:30 am to 5:00 pm.  Assists in searching Library collections/materials for lost/missing items or items that are claimed as returned.  Schedules student employees to cover two front services desk and do book runs around campus. The selected candidate will subscribe to and support our commitment to Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Accountability as stated above. Required Education and Experience:

  • High School Diploma or any equivalent combination of education and experience

  • One year of related library experience

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others

  • Good interpersonal skills

  • Excellent communication and customer service skills

  • Knowledge of email, word processing, spreadsheet applications and internet searches

Other Requirements or Factors

  • Must be able to work Sunday through Thursday from 8:30 am – 5:00 pm, with 30-minute break

  • Able to adjust schedule occasionally during extended hours and in the event of an emergency

  • Ability to extensively view a computer screen and use a computer keyboard and mouse/trackball type of point-and-click device  

  • Requires extensive bending and reaching

  • Ability to move throughout the buildings, including narrow aisles and small study rooms

  • Also requires the ability to operate key and numeric keypad door locking systems

  • Ability to move medium weight boxes, books, heavy book truck or similar items 

  • Ability to handle material which can contain dust or microscopic mold spores

Preferred Experience:

  • Prior experience in a library setting

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Conflict resolution skills

  • Reliable and consistent attendance

Responsibilities:

  • Desk Operations – Circulation – Provides basic front desk service coverage for both the Annex and Evans Library Service Desks during assigned hours. Responds to basic questions and/or problems and instructs library customers on accessing an extensive range of library online catalogs, research guides, physical collections, and other electronic reference databases in various specialized areas of study. Uses the library computer system to charge/discharge materials to users. Demonstrates basic conflict resolution skills with users. Interprets and explains library guidelines. Provides effective referrals to unit supervisors, Librarians, or other library service desks as appropriate. Explains availability of library resources. Uses the public online catalog to direct users to materials in the collection. Assists student workers in confrontational or hostile situations.

  • Processing Duties – Assists in searching the Library collection/materials for lost/missing items and items that are claimed to have been returned.  Assists with the stacks scanning project.

  • Student Employee Scheduling – Schedules student employees for two service desks, book runs, and search desk. Maintains schedules and schedule change requests to ensure desk coverage. Assists the manager with the student employee hiring process (reviews applications, interviews, and assists with hiring paperwork). Assists with student employee training. 

  • Emergency Response – Responds and takes appropriate action when security and/or fire alarms are set off or other building crises occur, facilitates safe evacuation, implements administrative Call Tree, and performs post event department checks, as appropriate. Performs other duties as assigned.
