Library Assistant – Part Time

Berkeley College seeks a part-time Library Assistant to perform a variety of detail-oriented, paraprofessional, and customer service-focused services. This is a part-time position covering 20 hrs/wk.

Responsibilities:

  • Greets, answers telephone, and provides general information to Library users.
  • Routes questions related to research and assignments to librarians.
  • Perform all circulation functions.
  • Understands, communicates. and enforces library policies and procedures.
  • Provide general assistance to students in the use of the library’s electronic resources photocopy machine, computers, and printers.
  • Replace paper and ink cartridges when necessary.
  • Perform a variety of tasks related to collection management including sorting, shelving, shifting, processing, and collection inventory activities.
  • Performs opening and closing procedures of the library during assigned shifts.
  • Supervises the use of and activity within the library in the absence of a Librarian.
  • Other duties as assigned and appropriate for the job function.

Qualifications, skills, and abilities:

  • Ability to meet attendance and punctuality requirements
  • Proficiency with computer applications including integrated library management systems, Microsoft Office products, and the ability to learn and use PeopleSoft.
  • Prior hardware/software troubleshooting experience.
  • Effective communication skills. Uses diplomacy and tact in all dealings with library users, staff, and supervisor.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to make sound decisions commensurate with level of individual’s function.
  • Ability to work a reasonably flexible schedule

  • Office environment
  • Quiet to moderate noise levels
  • Ability to work with regular interruptions from library users.
  • Combination of standing, walking, sitting, bending, reaching, grasping, and lifting up to 25 lbs.
