The Leipzig School of Natural Sciences – Building with Molecules and Nano-Objects (BuildMoNa) Graduate School focuses on interdisciplinary graduate education through top-level, synergistic research. Our materials research concept is based on a “bottom-up” approach. Progressive building blocks, such as nano-objects, smart molecules, polymeric scaffolds, peptides, and active proteins, are combined – preferentially by self-organisation – to create fundamentally new classes of materials that are inspired by active, adaptive living matter, and that are suitable, environmentally friendly, highly efficient, low-cost devices serving multifunctional purposes for a steadily more diversified modern society. The paradigm shift from uniform bulk materials towards nanostructured multifunctional materials that emerge from combinations of smart molecules, proteins, and nano-objects is essential for the future knowledge transfer from fundamental to applied sciences.
The research training consists of the research work and a well-structured training programme carried out by doctoral researchers under professional supervision. Due to the modular structure, the training is individual, flexible in time and efficiency-oriented, and will be specified in the Personal Development Plan. Doctoral researchers can choose the training modules based on their individual skills and time management within the timeline of graduate studies, provided that 20 credit points (CP) are acquired. Besides the research work, the training activities include scientific and methods modules, participation in workshops and conferences, research stays abroad, scientific symposia and colloquia, summer/winter schools, tutoring, and transferable skills.
Doctoral researchers have the opportunity to participate in interdisciplinary training programmes at several institutions collaborating with the graduate school.
Students have to pay 253.50 EUR (winter semester 2022): student services (8.50 EUR), student council (80 EUR) and MDV semester ticket (165 EUR).
The target group of the graduate school encompasses excellent and highly motivated students from all over the world who have completed either a BSc, MSc, or a diploma degree in natural sciences. In general, at the time of application, the last final degree must have been obtained during the last year. Furthermore, the students should be ranked among the top third of their year.
Applicants with outstanding results in a Bachelor’s degree (grade A, a minimum of six semesters) can be admitted to a “fast track” for a doctoral degree.

Leipzig University
Leipzig University was founded in 1409, and it is one of the oldest universities in Germany. Its motto, “A Tradition of Crossing Boundaries”, has been pursued ever since the foundation of the university more than 600 years ago. Today, Leipzig University is home to over 31,000 students. About 12 percent of these made their way to Leipzig from different foreign countries. Fourteen faculties offer 158 degree programmes taught in German and, to some extent, in English and other European languages. The Research Academy Leipzig is actively contributing to the process of internationalisation on the PhD level. The commitment of the faculties and institutes working hand in hand with the International Centre has resulted in the implementation of the three Erasmus+ Key Actions – funding of mobility, promotion of partnerships and university cooperation, and Erasmus+ policy support. Yet Leipzig University does not only cross boundaries in geographical terms. It also focuses increasingly on interdisciplinary research both within the university’s departments and with external research institutes and business partners such as Max Planck Institutes and the BioCity Leipzig.
Over the years, Leipzig University has fully implemented the Bologna process. A growing number of international degree programmes indicates that internationalisation has a top position in the priorities of the university. Furthermore, Leipzig University is internationally engaged as a member of the Utrecht Network – a global network of 32 European university partners in 27 countries cooperating in the area of internationalisation.
The ALMA MATER LIPSIENSIS has attracted world-class scholars in every century. Its counts philosophers, poets, composers, and politicians among its famous former students. A long list of prominent examples includes Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Robert Schumann, Friedrich Nietzsche, and the current chancellor, Angela Merkel. University location
Leipzig is a lively and student-friendly metropolis. With roughly 600,000 inhabitants, it is a culturally active community looking back on outstanding achievements. Leipzig is marked by its central positions as a city of composers and thinkers as well as an early centre for trade and fairs, and as the cradle for the peaceful revolution in 1989. Both modern and traditional taste will easily be satisfied by the city’s cultural offerings. These comprise numerous museums, the “Gewandhaus” (Leipzig Concert Hall), the “Thomanerchor” (a famous boys’ choir), and the Leipzig Opera as well as modern festivals like the “DOKFilm” film festival and the “euro-scene” (a modern dance and theatre performance). Leipzig is known for its dedicated student population and its free-spirited cultural scene. Open podium discussions, literary readings and a myriad of concerts, pubs and night clubs characterise the scene. To relax in between studies and events, beautiful parks are spread all over the city. Berlin, the German capital, is only an hour away by train.
In addition to Leipzig being a city of cultural interest, the university itself made treasures available to the public. The Museum of Antiquity, the Custodian Art collections and the University Library are some examples of this heritage. With its own orchestra, big band and choir, Leipzig University contributes actively to the dense cultural landscape.
