The Lecture or Senior Lecturer will be required to teach, undertake research, publish and attract funding in the area of Food Science with a specific focus on flavour science. The teaching will cover topics such as analytical methods and instruments used for measuring chemical composition, physical properties and flavour composition of foods, along with quality assurance systems used in food science. We have particular research strengths in sensory science and are seeking someone with a background in food and flavour science who can complement research in this area. The appointee will promote the School and maintain links and partnerships with relevant academic, industry and professional communities. The appointee will make an independent contribution to the School’s teaching, research, and program development.
The appointee with become a member of the CASS Food Research Centre (www.cassfood.com) and play a central research role in the ARC Industry Transformation Training Centre for Hyphenated Analytical Separation Technologies (ITTC), which begins operation in 2023.
The successful candidate will be appointed based on experience relevant to the role.
Your key responsibilities will include:
- Applying leading food/flavour sciences, food analysis and hyphenated analytical separation technologies practice into learning experiences for research students
- Applying leading food science practices (e.g. food analysis, food processing, quality assurance and food safety) into undergraduate learning experiences and resources and postgraduate student supervision.
- Integrating food industry and / or research practice into unit / course design and leading the development and / or adoption of new innovation in curriculum design within a course to improve student success and engagement
- Lead teaching teams to develop effective unit and course curricula and learning material (including through course leadership roles)
- Delivering learner-centric, research-informed teaching practices across different levels / modes of delivery
- Leading the review of units and contribute to the review of courses and implement refinements
- Contributing to the food node of a ITTC in hyphenated analytic separation technologies through working with industry partners and principal supervision of PhD students
- Developing and and increasingly lead industry partnerships (within and beyond the ARC ITTC) and collaborations to enable major breakthroughs, innovative solutions for future translation into real world impact
- Developing and and increasingly lead intra- and inter-disciplinary research collaborations (within and beyond the ARC ITTC), to enable major breakthroughs in knowledge, understanding and solutions to complex problems in food/flavour sciences and hyphenated analytical separation technologies
- Engaging in and increasingly developing academic or other collaborations that enable novel and high-quality research or creative activities in food/flavour sciences and hyphenated analytical separation technologies
Key selection criteria for the Senior Lecturer role:
- PhD in analytical chemistry, food science, or flavour science
- Successful track record of attracting nationally competitive or industry research funding
- Successful track record of research and publication in highly ranked academic journals, particularly in hyphenated analytic separation technologies, and/or flavour science
- Successful track record of working with industry partners on research projects.
- Ability to develop a flavour science research program within the CASS Food Research Centre
- Significant Experience in supervising PhD students in hyphenated analytical separation technologies, food chemistry, or flavour science including experience as primary supervisor for candidates through to completion
- Experience of working as a productive member of a research team with a scholarly publication record based on research or practice
- A record of achievement in contributing to undergraduate and post graduate teaching programs in a manner that influences, motivates and inspires students to learn
- Demonstrated ability to develop and administer assessment regimes and provide feedback that fosters independent learning
- Experience or demonstrated capability in developing curricula and resources that reflect an understanding of food analysis, food processing, quality assurance and food safety
- Knowledge of multi-literacies and experience in teaching effectively in a technology-enhanced contemporary higher education environment
- Experience in teaching and learning administration
- Demonstrated ability to contribute to the development and maintenance of partnerships with professional associations and with domestic educational institutions and the food industry
- Demonstrated commitment to Equal Opportunity principles and practices, and Occupational Health and Safety
- Active involvement in relevant committees or boards (desirable)
