Lecturer in Initial Teacher Education (Geography / Social Studies)

The School of Education invites applications for the position of Lecturer in Initial Teacher Education (Geography / Social Studies) on the Research and Teaching track. The School is a large and dynamic unit which brings together researchers with expertise across all sectors of education: formal and non-formal, pre-school through to higher, adult and community education. In the recent UK Research Excellence Framework (REF), the panel assessed 82.6% of our research outputs as either world leading (37.6%) or internationally excellent (45%) and 75% of our impact on society as world leading and 25% internationally excellent. We are particularly proud that we achieved the maximum score of 100% world leading in the assessment of the environment that we have established to support research.
The School aims to contribute to building better places locally, nationally and globally by providing a major source of research-informed evidence that contributes to positive economic and societal impact. A key feature of our research is our commitment to placing educational research as part of an interdisciplinary agenda to support the development of more equitable societies in the spirit of social justice.
The School is organised into four Research and Teaching Groups (RTGs): Culture, Literacies, Inclusion & Pedagogy (CLIP), Educational Leadership & Policy (ELP), Pedagogy, Praxis & Faith (PPF); and People, Place & Social Change (PPSC). This post is situated within PPF.
The School is situated within the College of Social Sciences (CoSS) and we welcome applications from candidates keen to contribute to interdisciplinary research, scholarship and knowledge exchange, and to work collaboratively in taking forward the CoSS interdisciplinary research themes: Addressing Inequalities; Challenges in Changing Cities; Digital Society and Economy; Justice, Insecurity and Fair Decision Making; and Sustainable Development.
Job Purpose
To develop, lead and sustain research and scholarship of international standard and contribute to the delivery of an excellent student experience by delivering, organising and reviewing agreed teaching, assessment and administration processes to enhance learning and teaching in the School of Education with a particular focus on Teacher Education (Social Studies with a Specialism in Geography).
Main Duties and Responsibilities
1. Pursue and deliver independent research proposals and/or collaborative research projects, project managing research activities, supervising and taking responsibility for the research team. Securing external resources to support research individually and/or jointly, as appropriate to the subject area.
2. Develop an expert reputation in the field of Teacher Education and Social Studies by effective dissemination and publishing of research findings in leading journals and conferences, and where appropriate, undertaking knowledge exchange activities.
3. Make a substantial contribution to developing and enhancing the research profile of the School in relation to teaching and learning in Social Studies. Establishing and leading research collaborations with appropriate individuals and groups within the University, including multidisciplinary links, and developing external research collaborations both nationally and internationally, to ensure that research activities are at the forefront of the field.
4. Contribute expertise and advice to relevant stake holder groups, including the education profession, policy makers, schools, and the wider community.
5. Actively contribute to the effective management and administration of the School, assuming responsibility for the management of allocated resources and contributing to the wider organisation of the School.
6. Carry out course administration within required timescales ensuring effective communication of information, in particular assessment requirements and criteria and timely and constructive feedback on assessment.
7. Develop effective approaches which enhance intellectual understanding and innovation in the field and support and enhance course delivery, course organisation, feedback and assessment. This will involve blended and/or online provision.
8. Ensure an inclusive and evidence-based approach to facilitating learning in a range of face-to-face and online delivery formats such as tutorials, lectures, problem-based learning, that promote student participation and learning outcome attainment.
9. Develop effective working relationships with students and early career staff in the subject specialism, providing specialist advice, support and academic leadership. Work in partnership with relevant student services teams and respond appropriately to the diverse range of learning approaches and learner needs.
10. Supervise project work at undergraduate and Masters levels and take forward the supervision and training of postgraduate research students.
11. Take on administrative or management roles within the School as assigned by the Head of School.
12. Engage in continuing professional development activities as appropriate.
13. Undertake any other reasonable duties as required by the Head of School

Qualifications
Essential:
A1 Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 12 (PhD), or equivalent, in Education with a growing reputation for scholarship within the area of Social Studies (Specialism in Geography)
A2 Eligible for GTCS registration (to be confirmed prior to application).
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
Essential:
C1 Extensive breadth and depth of knowledge in Teacher Education and Social Studies to develop research and teaching programmes.
C2 Established reputation in research and teaching, including an international research profile in Teacher Education and Social Studies.
C3 Proven ability to design, review and enhance multiple learning, teaching and assessment programmes and ability to model effective teaching methods within Initial Teacher Education programmes.
C4 Ability to communicate complex or conceptual ideas to those with limited knowledge and understanding.
C5 Ability to contribute to broader leadership and management activities along with an awareness of current and future priorities of the University/College/School.
C6 Established track record of research outputs and of applying for, and securing, external research funding compatible with enhancing the School’s research profile in accordance with School objectives.
C7 Experience and achievement within the field of Teacher Education and Social Studies reflected in an expanding personal academic portfolio.
C8 Experience of developing and demonstrating teaching and research methods and devising models, approaches, techniques, critiques and methods.
C9 Track record of continuous engagement with current practice and developing knowledge.
C10 Demonstrated commitment to open research, as appropriate to the discipline, through open data, open code, open educational resources and practices that support replication.
C11 Proven commitment to supporting the career development of colleagues and to other forms of collegiality appropriate to the career stage.
Desirable:
D1 Minimum of three years successful teaching experience in a primary or secondary school
D2 Knowledge of culturally responsive teaching practices
D3 Experience collaborating with school personnel within diverse schools
D4 Experience of contributing to Initial Teacher Education courses in teaching methods
D5 Experience supervising students during school placements
Terms and Conditions
Salary will be Grade 8, £46,047 – £53,353 per annum.
This post is full time (35 hrs per week) and open ended.
