Lecturer in Archaeology

The Department of Archaeology at Simon Fraser University is seeking to fill one continuing Teaching Faculty appointment at the rank of Lecturer in Archaeology, with a preferred start date of July 15, 2025.

​​Simon Fraser University is the number one comprehensive university in Canada, and the Department of Archaeology at SFU has a very high reputation and is widely recognized internationally, being recently placed within the top 20 in the world, the top 10 in North America, and 1st in Canada.

​​The Department has concentrated expertise in three areas: lab-based archaeological sciences, First Nations Heritage and Resource Management, and Biological Anthropology, including Forensic sciences. We have a strong focus on high-quality lab-, field- and community-based research and engagement, as well as on experiential training of our students.

​We are seeking an archaeologist or biological anthropologist, with a PhD in Archaeology/Anthropology or related areas, with a strong track record and significant experience in teaching. Candidates should demonstrate their engagement with teaching innovation, including technological, pedagogical, curricular, in assessment or organization and others, as well as training in teaching and learning strategies.

​We seek a highly versatile instructor to enhance our strengths in training in Archaeology and Biological Anthropology, namely by teaching our core and introductory lower-division courses, both in person and online (ARCH 100, 101, 131), as well as by teaching upper-division courses such as theory, field methods, hands-on/lab and other online courses (specifically ARCH 301). The successful candidate is expected to show a good understanding of current archaeological issues and is expected to contribute to the Department, Faculty, University and to the academic profession through service. This position is dedicated solely to teaching and service, and our normal teaching load for a Lecturer is 8 courses/year.

​Faculty salaries at SFU are based on the salary scales bargained between the University and the SFU Faculty Association. A reasonable estimate of the salary range for this position is $98,340 to $114,241. Candidates for the Lecturer position must have a PhD by the employment start date; however, PhD candidates with a solid indication of imminent completion may be considered. A reasonable estimate for the salary for a PhD candidate is $98,340.

​​Candidates should submit a maximum 2-page cover letter, a full teaching dossier, including a curriculum vitae, and the names of three referees (reference letters are not required at this stage). The teaching dossier should include: 1) a career overview of teaching activities and responsibilities, including a description of how innovative teaching tools have been developed and incorporated into teaching, 2) a statement of teaching philosophy, 3) student experience survey results, 4) a self-reflection commentary addressing an understanding of current archaeological issues, and how they are incorporated into teaching, and 5) samples of prepared course materials, including course syllabi, handouts, assignments, and examinations.
