Department Summary The Foundations Program serves as the gateway and first-year experience to all incoming students and is the core of all undergraduate degree programs in the College of Visual Arts and Design at The University of North Texas (UNT). Coursework in the Foundations Program introduces visual problem solving and critical thinking strategies drawing from history and contemporary culture, and the practice of various art and design forms across disciplines to prepare students for rigorous college courses in visual art, design, art education, and art history. The program has a diverse student body of 500-600 students enrolled across four interdisciplinary Foundations courses. It is served by a Foundations Director, four full-time faculty, two Visual Arts Technicians, and a team of Adjunct Assistant instructors and Graduate Teaching Assistants. Courses are delivered in a “lecture/lab” format, with all students completing regular online coursework and attending smaller weekly in-person studio classes.College of Visual Arts and DesignConsidered one of the leading visual arts and design schools in the nation, UNT’s College of Visual Arts and Design is home to more than 2,200 undergraduate and graduate students in NASAD and CIDA accredited programs including the BA, BFA, MA, and MFA in art education, art history, ceramics, communication design, drawing and painting, fashion design, interaction design, interdisciplinary art and design studies, interior design, metalsmithing and jewelry, new media art, photography, printmaking, sculpture, and user-experience design, with certification offered in art museum education, and a Ph.D. offered in art education. It includes the Department of Art Education, Department of Art History, Department of Design, Foundations Program, Interdisciplinary Art and Design Studies Program, and Department of Studio Art.Faculty are supported by travel, research, and creative project funding from the college and university. Position Summary The Foundations Program in the College of Visual Arts and Design seeks a dynamic faculty member with a terminal degree in art education, design, studio art, or a closely related field to teach in a full-time teaching position as the foundations lecturer.

The lecturer in Foundations will equip students with a fundamental understanding of the elements and principles of art and design while introducing them to diverse media and creative processes. Aligning with the goals of the foundations program, the new faculty member will help students develop conceptual, critical thinking, written, and verbal communication skills to articulate the process, research, and references. The new faculty member may lead one of the four interdisciplinary Foundations courses and mentor a team of lab instructors (AA and GTA) in delivering dynamic and unified instruction across multiple course sections and teach two courses/sections as assigned. The Foundations Lecturer will also work closely with the Foundations Director, Faculty, staff, and collaborate with the entire college to maintain the program’s ongoing curricular excellence. The college’s standard teaching load for a lecturer is eight courses per academic year.

Responsibilities include:
  • Working with the Foundations Director to facilitate and assess student learning and the success of Adjunct Assistants and Graduate Teaching Assistants.
  • Collaborating with Foundations faculty and staff on program-related activities and serving on institutional committees as needed.
  • Teaching responsibilities include but not limited to the following Foundations courses as needed.
    • ART 1600 – Foundations: Perception and Translation
    • ART 1700 – Foundations: Space (Physical, Temporal, and Virtual)
    • ART 1800 – Foundations: Narrative and Representation
    • ART 1900 – Foundations: Systems and Transformations
  • Engage/lead the pedagogical discussion and participate in the Foundations Program’s regular review of its curriculum
Minimum Qualifications MFA/MDES or equivalent terminal degree in Art Education, Design, Studio Art, or a closely related field with at least two years of college-level teaching experience, a demonstrated commitment to foundations pedagogy, and commitment to fostering IDEA (inclusion, diversity, equity, and access). to fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion
Preferred Qualifications One or more years of college-level teaching in diverse media, experience developing innovative curricula, experience working with Graduate Teaching Assistants, professional engagement in art, design, or closely related field, engagement in foundations pedagogy, and active engagement in fostering IDEA (inclusion, diversity, equity, and access).
