VISION FOR THE POSITION
MPL Learning Place Program Instructors deliver MPL’s literacy and technology based programs, creating a dynamic, inclusive and supportive environment for participants. Learning Place Instructors are hard-working, flexible, dynamic instructors who are excited to facilitate innovative programs that are both fun and educational. Learning Place Program Instructors are enthusiastic teachers who enjoy bringing our lesson plans to life. This position is ideal for candidates who enjoy a lot of creative freedom and take responsibility for fostering a supportive and amazing learning environment.
RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Facilitates, leads and supervises the program
2. Delivers Markham Public Library’s lesson plans
3. Works alongside and provides direction to volunteers instructing classes at MPL’s branches over 5-8 week sessions
4. Prepares and organized program equipment and supplies for the lesson
5. Provides excellent customer service to parents
6. Creates a great space for learning to happen
7. Ensures safety at all times
8. Other duties as required
SCHEDULE & COMMITMENT
Learning Place Instructors are expected to commit to every session of the program they are facilitating. Programs typically run once a week for 5-8 weeks primarily weekday evenings and weekends at multiple library branches. Learning Place Instructors will be provided orientation and training prior to the first session.
QUALIFICATIONS
1. Successful completion of a high school diploma. Candidates pursuing studies in education, or other areas related to children and learning preferred.
2. Demonstrated experience working with school aged children
3. Demonstrated experience teaching STEAM or technology
4. The position works at various MPL locations, and accessibility to these locations is the responsibility of the incumbent.
5. Current first aid certification.
6. Successful candidates must have a valid Vulnerable Sector Screening prepared within the last six months.
DEMONSTRATED SKILLS
1. Is energetic and enthusiastic with demonstrated skills in motivating children.
2. Has an interest in and understanding of early childhood development including the development of pre-literacy skills.
3. Has exceptional interpersonal skills and the ability to interact positively with library customers and program participants from diverse cultures.
4. Strong leadership skills and exceptional oral communication skills required.
HOURS AND SALARY: $24.29 per hour
Please note that Markham Public Library is open 7 days per week, and regular weekend work might be required.
