Learning Engineer


CMU’s Online Programs has an opening for a Learning Engineer to support faculty in designing online/remote graduate-level courses and developing and incorporating effective uses of technology-enhanced learning (TEL) in their course design and online/remote teaching.
Responsibilities include:
•Developing online instructional assets that align with teaching and learning goals and apply research-based learning principles for adult online learning/education. This work will range from developing smaller-scale prototypes to fully online courses; the production of which will require experience with online course authoring technologies.
•Creation of and support for instructional video design, production, and editing.
•Providing 1:1 teaching consultations on: (1) selection of technologies appropriately aligned with teaching and learning needs, and (2) strategies for effectively implementing technology to enhance learning in online/remote courses.
•Developing resources and supporting CMU Online programs aimed at educating instructors about relevant technology options, best practices for their uses to enhance learning, and strategies for effectively integrating them into courses.
•Staying abreast of emerging technology developments, potential pedagogical applications, and associated educational research.

Job requirements: A Masters or Ph.D. in learning engineering, design, instructional design, or related area; 2+ years of experience implementing fully online courses, blended courses, and/or instructional components/assets (an online portfolio demonstrating related work/past projects). Experience promoting the effective use of educational technology; experience with creating digitally accessible materials/courses; ability to consult with instructors across disciplines and teaching contexts; ability to work collaboratively and effectively in settings of social and intellectual diversity; strong oral and written communication skills; and sensitivity to teaching and learning needs at a research university.

Desirable qualifications: Experience embedding data hooks to analyze instructional effectiveness and/or developing educational technology tools; familiarity with andragogy principles and best practices; familiarity with the literature on learning science research; experience using quantitative and/or qualitative research methods or learning analytics.
