This course will introduce students to the principles and rules of legal ethics and professionalism in Canada. We will also look at the main rules governing the legal profession and the practice of law, including the structure of the profession, the nature of the lawyer-client relationship, the duties of competence, integrity and courtesy, professional secrecy and other types of privileges, confidentiality, discretion, conflicts of interests, the duties towards the administration of justice, and the disciplinary process. We will also explore the application of those rules in different procedural contexts (e.g. negotiation, mediation and adjudication), as well as in different fields of legal practice.

TQR: At a minimum, a first degree in law. Several years of significant practice or professional experience, in the relevant area; Experience in teaching undergraduate law students in a bilingual setting

In the event of such a change, Course Lecturers will be advised without delay. Course Lecturers may be required to prepare and deliver teaching material suited to a remote/online teaching environment using a virtual learning platform [e.g., Zoom, WebEx] and the McGill myCourses learning management system.  Training and assistance on remote teaching is available through Teaching and Learning Services (TLS) .
