Job Summary: This is responsible work carrying out campus law enforcement and safety functions involved in the protection of life and property, preservation of the peace, prevention of crime, and rendering of services to the University community. Personnel in this position enforce laws at the university and provide security for administrative and other buildings, parking areas, dormitories, and other campus facilities. Duties also include preliminary investigations, writing reports, enforcing traffic laws and parking regulations, investigating traffic accidents, handling suspicious or irregular conditions, and the apprehension of criminal violators. Work in this position is performed under the supervision of a Law Enforcement Corporal and Sergeant.

Minimum Qualifications: Must meet the requirements of Chapter 943 Florida Statutes and have one year of law enforcement experience. Two years of military or other appropriate experience may substitute for the required one year of law enforcement experience. Appropriate college course work or vocational/ technical training may substitute at an equivalent rate for the required experience.
Position Qualifications: 1. Knowledge of basic law enforcement and investigative techniques, crime prevention and control methods and procedures. 2. Knowledge of the criminal justice system, rules of evidence, arrest, search and seizure techniques and procedures. 3. Knowledge of campus facilities and layout, university and academic environment. 4. Knowledge of principles or correct grammar usage. 5. Knowledge of when to solicit supervisory assistance when confronted with confusing or unclear instructions and in problem solving.
Preferred Qualifications Ability to work in dangerous and stressful situations, to communicate effectively verbally and in writing, to probe and obtain critical facts, to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others, to collect and evaluate data, to apply laws, rules, regulations, and policies to situations using appropriate judgment to deal with individuals and critical situations in an effective manner, and to plan, organize, and coordinate assignments. Possess report writing skills. This position requires a post-offer employment exam, psychological exam, Physical Abilities Test (PAT), physical exam, police background check, and fingerprinting. Ability to complete complex psychomotor skills necessary to drive a patrol vehicle, operate a bicycle, shoot a shotgun, rifle, and handgun successfully at a moving or nonmoving target, use a baton, and a taser. The university will not hire, as law enforcement employees, any individuals who smoke or use smokeless tobacco products.
Essential Functions / Job Duties:

• 25% – Coordinates and conducts in-service training for University Police Department personnel to include high-liability law enforcement training, Creates and maintains annual training schedule. Maintains Departmental training files. Electronically submits required training forms/information into FDLE Automated Training Management System. Interprets and applies State of Florida laws and administrative code pertaining to maintenance of law enforcement officer certification and training. – (Essential)
• 25% – Conducts public information programs to inform the University community of personal safety and crime prevention. Provides non-law enforcement public services as authorized by law and consistent with good police practices and which are of benefit to students, faculty, staff and visitors; maintains good police/community relations by focusing on information and education which culminates in community action and crime prevention. – (Essential)
• 5% – Reduces theft of state and university property by providing continuing safety and security analysis of facilities and making recommendations for improvement on existing security systems. – (Essential)
• 5% – Provides for the orderly and efficient movement and control of vehicular and pedestrian traffic on and through the University by education and direct enforcement actions; issues warnings and citations for traffic law and parking regulation violations; enforces parking regulations and directs and controls the flow of traffic and parking as required or directed. – (Essential)
• 5% – Interviews complainants, victims, witnesses, and suspects; apprehends and arrests criminal offenders; appears in court as an arresting officer or witness. – (Essential)
• 5% – Responds to and investigates traffic accidents and prepares and submits traffic accident reports; secures traffic accident scenes as necessary and administers basic life support and first aid within means until arrival of competent medical personnel. – (Essential)

• 4% – Provides fire watch for all buildings, property, and other facilities on campus; reports violations of environmental health, safety, and fire codes; assists in evacuating persons housed in or otherwise occupying areas threatened by fire or other disaster; attempts to control fires pending arrival of local fire department; assists in search and rescue activities. – (Essential)
• 5% – Patrols the University campus, either on foot or in a police vehicle, to enforce laws and provide a maximum crime deterrence through conspicuous, aggressive patrol of the grounds and other campus facilities. – (Essential)
• 5% – Conducts investigations into violations of federal, state, and local laws; secures and conducts preliminary investigations at crime scenes; collects, identifies, and preserves evidence; makes official reports of complaints and all criminal and non-criminal miscellaneous incidents that he/she investigates on university property; assists in crowd, mob and riot control activities; coordinates law enforcement activities with other agencies as required. – (Essential)
