Job Summary: This is responsible work carrying out campus law enforcement and safety functions involved in the protection of life and property, preservation of the peace, prevention of crime, and rendering of services to the University community. Personnel in this position enforce laws at the university and provide security for administrative and other buildings, parking areas, dormitories, and other campus facilities. Duties also include preliminary investigations, writing reports, enforcing traffic laws and parking regulations, investigating traffic accidents, handling suspicious or irregular conditions, and the apprehension of criminal violators. Work in this position is performed under the supervision of a Law Enforcement Corporal and Sergeant.

Minimum Qualifications: Must meet the requirements of Chapter 943 Florida Statutes and have one year of law enforcement experience. Two years of military or other appropriate experience may substitute for the required one year of law enforcement experience. Appropriate college course work or vocational/ technical training may substitute at an equivalent rate for the required experience.
Position Qualifications: 1. Knowledge of basic law enforcement and investigative techniques, crime prevention and control methods and procedures. 2. Knowledge of the criminal justice system, rules of evidence, arrest, search and seizure techniques and procedures. 3. Knowledge of campus facilities and layout, university and academic environment. 4. Knowledge of principles or correct grammar usage. 5. Knowledge of when to solicit supervisory assistance when confronted with confusing or unclear instructions and in problem solving.
Preferred Qualifications Ability to work in dangerous and stressful situations, to communicate effectively verbally and in writing, to probe and obtain critical facts, to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others, to collect and evaluate data, to apply laws, rules, regulations, and policies to situations using appropriate judgment to deal with individuals and critical situations in an effective manner, and to plan, organize, and coordinate assignments. Possess report writing skills. This position requires a post-offer employment exam, psychological exam, Physical Abilities Test (PAT), physical exam, police background check, and fingerprinting. Ability to complete complex psychomotor skills necessary to drive a patrol vehicle, operate a bicycle, shoot a shotgun, rifle, and handgun successfully at a moving or nonmoving target, use a baton, and a taser. The university will not hire, as law enforcement employees, any individuals who smoke or use smokeless tobacco products.
