Laboratory Technologist (Tropical Marine Science Institute)



Job Description

The job exists as a replacement for a Laboratory Technician that had left the group in June 2021, and to support the team with the existing sampling and analytical requirements. 

Duties & Responsibilities
1) Screening of seawater samples for phytoplankton
2) Analysing seawater samples for total organic content, total suspended solids and
zooplankton biomass
3) Supporting role in procurement for the group
4) Supporting role in the post-processing of sediment samples and identification of
dinoflagellate cysts in these samples
5) Participate in regular field trips onboard research vessels and at intertidal areas that
extend outside conventional office hours, which includes:
o Preparation, collection and analysis of water and sediment samples
o Conduct surveys of intertidal areas
6) Data management:
o Data entry and data reporting deliverables
o Basic assessment of data and trends, includes timely quality analysis of data collected
from the above laboratory analyses
7) General duties:
o Maintenance of laboratories and equipment
o Purchasing of consumables and equipment
o Liaising with vendors
o Administrative duties

Qualifications

Polytechnic Diploma in Marine/Life/Applied Sciences or equivalent
Strong troubleshooting and analytical skills
Resourcefulness, independence and ability to learn fast
Flexibility to work with and provide support for multiple projects at once
Ability to work outside conventional working hours, when required
Proficient in MS Office applications (e.g. Word and Excel)
Good written and verbal communication skills in English
Possessing a Class 3 driving license is preferred but not required
Any prior experience will be an advantage
