Laboratory Specialist or Laboratory Specialist Intermediate, The Robert M. Berne Cardiovascular Research Center (UVA)

The Robert M. Berne Cardiovascular Research Center (CVRC) at the University of Virginia (UVA) School of Medicine is currently seeking a Laboratory Specialist or a Laboratory Specialist Intermediate, to become a participating member of the Toldo Lab. The incumbent will participate in research and requires an understanding of research techniques. The primary purpose of this position it to assist with performing complex experiments, per the direction of Principal Investigator or senior staff, to perform biological, immunological, and chemical analysis.  The incumbent should be self-guided and creative in seeking possible solutions to experimental/design challenges at hand and have strong communication skills.

The successful candidate will be expected to:

• Participate in research work involving treatment operations and experiments with animals to including weaning and genotyping mice.

• Use of immunology assays including flow cytometry staining and analysis and ELISA.

• Isolate, culture, and differentiate primary lymphocytes for cell biology experiments. 

• Perform immune/histological staining of animal tissues.

• Assist with mouse surgeries and wound suturing. Keep surgical logs and care of post-surgical monitoring of mice.

• Prepare support materials, compare, and assist with analyses of data, and write reports. Assist with literature reviews.

• Record accurate information and logs of experimental data.

• Keep informed of new lab techniques.

• Provide technical and administrative support to research projects.

• Complete laboratory purchasing following University, Federal, and State policies and procedures.

• Work with students, post-docs, and other members of the lab to assist in conducting all aspects of experiments. 

• Coordinate research projects and logistics with other lab members.

• Maintain oversight of laboratory purchasing, equipment, and supplies required for the operation of the laboratory.

• Maintain compliance with University, Federal, and State policies and procedures.

• Maintain open communication and consultation with the Principle Investigator on a regular basis.

• In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.

Minimum Requirements for Lab Specialist:

• Education: Bachelor’s degree.

• Experience: Three years of experience which may include student experience. Six years of experience accepted in lieu of degree.

Minimum Requirements for Lab Specialist Intermediate:

• Education: Bachelor’s degree.

• Experience: Six years of experience in a lab technician role. Master’s degree may substitute for required experience. Nine years of experience accepted in lieu of degree.

Physical Demands: This position can spend extensive periods of time standing and squatting while conducting experiments or caring for animals. Also requires keyboarding and other bench work and animal procedures requiring finer finger manipulation.

This position is located in Charlottesville, VA.  This position is a restricted position and is dependent upon project need, availability of funding and performance.
