Laboratory Research Assistant–(220001H9) The University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) Department of Psychiatry has an exciting opportunity for a Laboratory Research Assistant to join their Division of Adult Psychiatry. The Lab Research Assistant performs routine laboratory maintenance and research activities such as general housekeeping, wipe tests, ELISA essays, preparing solutions, media, stains, and buffers; cultures and specimens; autoradiograms and photomicrographs, executing biochemical procedures such as: electrophoresis, blotting, chromatography, DNA extraction, chemical procedures such as simple synthesis, product isolation, and biophysical procedures such as optical and kinetics measurements, etc.
The Department of Psychiatry has a tripartite mission of Clinical, Education, and Research agendas, serving our surrounding community and the State of Maryland, and providing expertise at a national and international level. We are staffed with 85 full-time and 30 part-time faculty, and provide a robust array of evidenced-based services both locally at the University of Maryland Medical Center and remotely to the entire University of Maryland Medical System that encompasses 13 hospitals. The selected candidate will perform duties that support the mission of the department.

Essential Functions
Maintain the mouse colony including weaning, tail clipping, tagging, genotyping, intraperitoneal injection of drugs, tissue harvesting and meticulous record keeping.
Collect, prepare and processes specimens for further biochemical/histological analysis.
Follow established procedures or protocols and utilizes aseptic technique to perform experiments.
Operate basic laboratory equipment such as centrifuge, pH meter, analytical balance, spectrophotometer, light microscope, and utilizes laminar flow hood. Operate lab computers for data entry.
Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of experiments performed.
Use sterile techniques to avoid contaminating lab experiments.
Use universal safety precautions to protect self and co-workers.
Prepare, clean, sterilize, and maintain laboratory equipment, glassware, and instruments used in research experiments.
Ensure compliance with biohazard/radiation safety standards through proper handling of potentially hazardous chemical and biological agents and/or radiation sources in the workplace.
May perform advanced laboratory research activities such as: animal surgery, microscopy techniques, imaging techniques, recombinant DNA techniques, protein purification, and hybridizations, etc. May participate in the design of research studies.
Assist with literature search, editing and preparing manuscripts, scientifical illustrations and computer graphics for publication.
Perform administrative duties such as: training and guiding students and/or other laboratory technicians; assisting in developing policies, procedures and/or methods for laboratory experimentation; and ordering supplies.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education: Bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry or field of study related to the research of the laboratory. Master’s degree in a biological or chemical science is preferred. Experience: None required. Prior laboratory experience including experience in a combination of mouse experience and experience with basic biochemical techniques (i.e. western-blot) preferred. Other: May require training related to occupational safety and health, environmental compliance, shipping of hazardous materials and/or ionizing radiation. May consider a combination of directly related experience and education.

The Hiring Range for this position is in the low to mid $40,000s, commensurate with education and experience.
