Position Summary: Under the direction of the immediate supervisor, the Laboratory Manager will provide efficient and effective leadership for administrative and research aspects related to the laboratory operations of the Clinical Research Unit at the Neuro. The Laboratory Manager will work collaboratively within the research team and with sponsors and Contract Research Organizations and their work will evolve with the needs of the team. The incumbent will ensure that the activities are performed in accordance with University and sponsor policies and procedures. Main responsibilities include:
Primary Responsibilities:
- Responsible for the development, the implementation and the review of standard operating procedures related to laboratory work.
- Develop and implement laboratory procedures and work methods. Structure and implement recommendations to improve efficiency in cross-functional work across the unit involving sample processing, packaging and shipping.
- Investigate and resolve issues related to all biological samples’ shipments. Work with couriers and customs to resolve time-sensitive shipping issues.
- Develop best practices, address issues and implement solutions pertaining to the inventory system for laboratory study kits, equipment and materials.
- Seek quotations, analyze them, establish budget and collaborate with the unit’s financial officer for the purchase and maintenance of laboratory equipment and material.
- Responsible for the planning of laboratory space and corresponding floorplan in the context of expansion and/or reorganization projects. Identify industry standards and regulatory requirements to be met as part of laboratory physical space layout and function
- Responsible for the preparation, packaging and shipment of biological specimens from clinical trial participants in accordance with the pre-specified instructions, protocols, good clinical practice and International Air transportation Association guidelines.
- Responsible for the on boarding and training of new research technicians. Provide training to other staff in the unit and ensure trainings are up-to-date.
- Provide technical guidance and assistance concerning laboratory equipment and procedures. Represent the lab team in Clinical Research Unit senior management team meetings. Prepare presentations as needed and present at staff or other meetings.
- Act as the main resource person for any laboratory-related questions for unit staff and pharmaceutical sponsors as necessary. Work with McGill and Neuro Information Technology for specific technology needs pertaining to lab operations for clinical trials.
- Establish time and cost estimates for laboratory related work in the Clinical Trials Management System for all sponsored clinical projects.
- Represent the laboratory team in sponsor site selection, activation, monitoring and audit visits.
- Review and analyze specimen collection needs and preparation aspects for investigator-initiated projects. Act as the main lab resource for new information technology projects and advise on feasibility. Create comprehensive budgets for complex IITs, including cost of supplies, resource requirements, time and others costs.
- Develop and implement quality assurance controls for the lab and work on mitigation plans to resolve mistakes and prevent errors.
- Delegate daily tasks to research technician(s). Prepare and communicate lab coverage schedule to research technician(s).
- Prepare project specific laboratory manuals for investigator-initiated trials.

(MPEX Grade 05) $65,500.00 – $81,870.00 – $98,240.00
