Job Description Summary

This Laboratory Coordinator position is a limited term position through June 2024.
Under the direction of the Department Chair and the Laboratory Manager, the Laboratory Coordinator (regular 9-month academic year position) performs varied professional duties to assist the faculty and contribute to the safe and efficient functioning of the teaching and research laboratories, a vital component of the department’s curriculum. Laboratory Coordinators contribute to the students’ rich learning experience in the sciences at Bentley. Laboratory Coordinators are primarily assigned to courses in their area of professional training but depending on their skills, experience, and the needs of the department, they may perform similar functions for other courses.

Essential Duties

  • Laboratory preparation duties: prepares, sets up, and breaks down materials/kits for exercises and experiments, and works with faculty to ensure the safety of lab procedures.
  • Comfortable with outdoor field activities; including water.
  • Laboratory instruction/teaching: assists faculty with teaching responsibilities in the laboratory and field setting such as being present along with faculty during class and assisting students with experiments and procedures as needed.
  • Effective communicator with faculty and colleagues
  • Maintains equipment, supplies, and the functionality of laboratory facilities.
  • Ensures proper inventory of chemicals, materials, and works with faculty to ensure compliance with safety regulations (MSDS sheets, etc.) 
  • Assists faculty in the development of new laboratory exercises and courses as appropriate. Performs various other duties including purchasing, updating bulletin boards, and administrative support functions as needed.
  • Participates in faculty research projects as appropriate.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in STEM or STEM-related field
  • Attention to laboratory safety is paramount.
  • Individuals with teaching experience or experience working with students in a laboratory environment preferred.
  • Should be proficient in Microsoft Office.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Should have outstanding laboratory and computer skills as well as a demonstrated background in chemical and biological methods.
  • Ability to swim to assist with occasional water based duties

Work Environment

  • The job requires the physical skill necessary to move about a laboratory area, setting up equipment.  Outdoor field work required.
  • There may be some lifting required.
  • In addition, some time is spent at the keyboard, and much time is spent on their feet in the classroom/laboratory.
  • The position requires the manual dexterity to safely handle chemicals, equipment, and materials.
