Job Overview

The Lab Technician provides strong and reliable scientific lab support for a newly awarded 5-year NIH grant (NIAID U01AI170024) – critical groundwork for biomedical research and related communications that is vital to project and program success. Their role is important for Georgetown University to uphold its ethical work presence, including animal welfare, high research standards, progress in academic and scientific fields, and the gain of research funds, especially those that include indirect dollars that support the university itself.

Performing with a high-level skill set in mouse model and cell experimental studies, the Lab Technician assists in collection of tissues and biofluids, and implements many other lab skills and techniques, including such as partial body irradiation and molecular biology and biochemistry assays. 

As well, they train and mentor students and new staff – a required part of close teamwork – and apply their excellent time and work management experience to strengthen the teams’ research capabilities and increase program growth and opportunities.

Work Interactions

Reporting to Dr. Albert J. Fornace Jr. and Dr. Heng-Hong Li, the Lab Technician interacts with members of the department and other departments, including faculty, staff, and students, as well as specialized cores (such as histology, cell/tissue, metabolomics, Division of Comparative Medicine, and Environmental Health & Safety) and external entities, such as vendors and collaborators. 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a Biology/Biochemistry-related program
  • At least 1 to 2 years of work experience in a professional research lab setting environment
  • Strong team-work and collaboration skills
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Skilled in organization and in written and oral communications
  • Skilled in software training, database management, and website content management
  • Ability to work efficiently, with multitasking capabilities and good record keeping
  • Skilled in basic biochemistry and general microscopy
  • Willingness to learn rodent handling (if not already skilled)

Preferred qualifications

  • Animal handling skills
  • Past training in radiation and tissue culture
  • Knowledge of immunology and metabolomics
