The College of Veterinary Medicine, Cornell University, Department of Population Medicine and Diagnostic Sciences seeks an organized, self-motivated, and mission-driven Technician-III to assist in the Altier lab.  Research in our laboratory focuses on how the bacterial pathogen Salmonella responds to its environment to express traits necessary for survival and virulence. A major research focus describes the cues within an animal host that affect virulence gene expression. Funded work examines how changes in the environment of the intestine affect the virulence of Salmonella and how these conditions might be manipulated to reduce disease.  

Under the direction of the principal investigator, you will conduct independent projects and will engage in laboratory organization and maintenance. Participation in scientific activities such as seminars and lab meetings, in addition to their experimental obligations, is required.

Once established and trained in the lab, we will rely on you to:

  • Perform testing of virulence phenotypes using gene expression studies, cell culture-based assays, and animal experiments.Relevant techniques include growing bacterial strains and preparation of moderately complex reagents for the construction of bacterial mutants, PCR, DNA cloning, β-galactosidase assays, bacterial transformation, and transduction.
  • Collect samples from research animals (mice and chickens), assist in infecting animals with Salmonella bacteria, and aid necropsies in isolating and analyzing infected tissues.
  • Develop and maintain detailed and accurate laboratory records.Summarize and present reports to the primary investigator in a logical format.
  • Assist in the scheduling, design, and development of experiments.
  • Maintain the laboratory, manage inventory and order supplies, clean and autoclave glassware, and prepare hazardous waste for disposal. Maintain laboratory equipment, including troubleshooting problems, arranging repairs, and keeping detailed records of all calibrations, issues, and repairs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned

This position is 39 hours per week, with some weekend hours required occasionally.

*This is a one-year term position; reappointment will be contingent upon funding and performance.

What you need to have:

  • Associate’s degree in biology or a related field and up to 2 years relevant experience working in a research laboratory or equivalent combination.
  • Excellent relational, communication (both oral and written), and organizational skills along with strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to keep detailed and accurate notes, exercise sound judgment and discretion in carrying out duties, dealing with issues, solving problems, and/or setting priorities.
  • Must be able to work proactively as well as in a team-oriented environment.
  • Must be excellent in basic computer skills.

Will be required to complete Cornell training courses including Cornell Safety Courses in biological and chemical safety, and hazardous materials and waste, and Cornell Center for Animal Resources and Education (CARE) animal handling training.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Microbiology or Animal Science with at least 1 years’ experience working in a biological research laboratory preferred.
  • Interest in bacterial genetics.
  • Experience working with pathogenic bacteria or with animal studies.

On the job training will be provided to help bridge any deficiencies in experience.
