Lab Specialist Senior, Department of Neuroscience

Dr. Ukpong Eyo in the Department of Neuroscience at the University of Virginia and Center for Brain Immunology and Glia seeks a motivated and detail-oriented Lab Specialist Senior to perform and assist with laboratory management and experimental procedures. The individual is required to provide oversight of complex lab environments and be responsible for directing the technical activities of assigned lab research. They will be expected to coordinate the activities of multiple, complex projects and supervise staff. They will be responsible for making decisions related to laboratory operations and personnel, including quality control, ordering of supplies, compliance with regulations, budget priorities, long-range planning, keep employees abreast of current changes and standards, ensure that lab personnel maintain current knowledge of lab techniques, procedures, and equipment operation, and development and implementation of lab policies. In addition to managing complex laboratory operations, the individual will direct the work of a sufficient number of lab members so that a significant amount of their time is spent supervising teams.

A Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Microbiology, Immunology, Neuroscience or a related field and a minimum of nine years of experience working in a laboratory setting is required. Experience may be substituted with a Master’s or Terminal degree plus 4 years of experience in a lab technician role and supervisory experience. 12 years of lab-related experience accepted in lieu of degree. The successful candidate should also possess excellent written and oral communication skills and be motivated to learn new laboratory techniques and skills. Applicants should also possess strong problem-solving skills and be able to work independently and as part of a team.

This position can spend extensive periods of time standing and squatting while conducting experiments or caring for animals. Also requires keyboarding and other bench work and animal procedures requiring finer finger manipulation.
