Job Description Summary
The Laboratory Manager is responsible for the day-to-day activities of the Laboratory and will oversee the overall planning, developing, coordination, directing and management of various research activities within the Research Brain Imaging Program of Dr. Ruth Grunau, a Professor in the Division of Neonatology/Department of Pediatrics, at the University of British Columbia.
Organizational Status
The Lab Manager reports directly to Dr. Ruth Grunau, and liaises with other members of Dr. Grunau s research group, including co-investigators, researchers, research assistants, post-doctoral fellows, students and staff.
Work Performed
Oversees the design and modification of complex experiments using technically advanced procedures and conducts complex statistical analysis and interpretation. For example, uses neuroscience softwares such as FSL, SPM, FieldTrip, and Freesurfer to process neuroimaging data (MRI, DTI, and MEG). Develops and writes algorithms and programs for novel data analytical methods, and performs highly specialized data analysis using Matlab, R, and SPSS. Knowledge of brain anatomy and function, as well as genetics and epigenetics is essential for planning and interpreting data analyses, interpretation, and communicating with the PI, researchers and trainees.
Acting as the laboratory representative in a liaison capacity with other research laboratories and other academic units.
Liaising with various UBC departments such as Finance, Research Services, University-Industry Liaison Office, Risk Management Services and Facilities Management in matters relating to finance, research, health & safety and facilities.
Participating in project planning and execution and attending meeting to define strategy, goal and scope of research projects.
Oversees the development of novel protocols and safety procedures for new studies.

Manages and oversees the daily operations and finances of the Grunau Laboratory, including responsibility for budget, large purchases, inventory, forecasting and maintenance of financial reports. Participating in project planning and execution and attending meeting to define strategy, goal and scope of research projects.
Supervises staff who develops standard operating procedures for new protocols. Designs and makes recommendations on system and workflow improvements.
Oversees the progress of projects and implements activities to ensure the success of each project.
Writes reports; assists in writing ethics proposals and grant applications; takes a lead role on writing abstracts and scientific manuscripts for conference presentation/submission.
Supervises, schedules and trains staff and makes recommendations with respect to hiring and providing input into staff performance.
Consequence of Error/Judgement
This position is critical in maintaining the integrity and expectations of the PI s research program. Exercises a considerable amount of judgment, responsibility, and initiative in determining work procedures and methods, and coordinating the work of the unit. Failure to manage the laboratory financial resources could result in over-expenditure of the project grants that could compromise future funding requests. Poor fiscal management could also result in the termination of positions within the laboratory to make up the budget shortfall and severe negative impacts on funding, employment and education.
Supervision Received
Works under minimum supervision, receiving specific instructions only on unusual problems or on matters which depart significantly from established policy and procedure. Reports directly to the Principal Investigator, Dr. Ruth Grunau.
Supervision Given
Has supervisory responsibilities over research staff and undergraduate students. Contributes to and supports graduate student and post-doctoral fellow research projects. Has input into staff selection and performance evaluation.
Minimum Qualifications
Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of two years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Graduate degree in a relevant discipline in Neuroscience is preferred for this positionHigh level of computer literacy with ability to use word processing, spreadsheet, internet and electronic mail applications at an intermediate level. Experience with online literature searches, web-based applications, desk-top publishing and 3D modeling applications (including Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, 3ds Max, and Blender would be an asset. Extensive experience with statistical software programs (e.g. SPSS, R) and extensive experience using Microsoft Office (WORD, Excel, Powerpoint, Outlook, Access) for Windows and Mac, as well as Linux OS is required. Working knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Indesign, Illustrator) would be an asset. Experience with neuroscience software programs (such as FSL, AFNI, SPM, FieldTrip, Freesurfer, etc) is required. Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing. Ability to compose correspondence, reports, presentations, and other written materials using clear concise business English. Ability to be thorough, accurate, and have a high level of attention to detail. Superior Organizational skills. Ability to effectively manage multiple tasks and priorities. Ability to prioritize and work effectively under pressure to meet deadlines. Ability to perform word processing at 50 words per minute. Ability to operate job-related office equipment. Ability to work effectively independently and in a team environment.
