The University of Groningen Library (UB) is the information hub for the University of Groningen. Job description

The explosion of academic information and the new possibilities for linking data have made the use of metadata indispensable and it is developing at lightning speed. Good metadata enables researchers to find and combine all kinds of data, and helps libraries to make their collections more visible. At the University of Groningen Library (UB), we are looking for a (Junior) Metadata Specialist with ambition who would like to delve into various metadata issues and who enjoys keeping up with the developments.

The Metadata team is part of the Content Department. Some of the staff members are responsible for applying metadata to, and cataloguing, various resources, while others are in charge of validating the research output of UG researchers in Pure.

What will you do?

As (Junior) Metadata Specialist, you will learn the intricacies of the field of metadata and you will learn about the role metadata plays within the UB. You will follow a trajectory to become an expert in the field of metadata as a Senior Metadata Specialist. To this end, you will follow the necessary courses and training programmes. Your tasks will include the following:

? you will catalogue the various materials in the UB’s large collection, such as monographs or old dissertations, and you will also process donations and bequests
? you will follow the national and international developments in the field of metadata standards and information systems, gain knowledge about these topics, give instructions about their use, and draw up proposals for a metadata policy
? on the basis of your expertise, you will participate in projects on both a local and a national scale (such as in the UKB consortium)
? you will support your colleagues within and outside the department in making optimal use of metadata, and in finding information
? you will support the content-based cataloguing process and other metadata-related activities, both inside and outside your department, such as at the Special Collections department
? you will implement standards
? you will create, maintain, and manage manuals, and describe work processes
? you will develop yourself to become an expert in the field of metadata.

Qualifications

Who are you?

? you must have an intellectual and professional level at least equivalent to that of vocational education (HBO)
? you must have knowledge of national and international metadata standards (Marc21, RDA, NACO), or be willing to learn about these
? you should have an affinity with RDM, Open Science, heritage, scripting, and programming
? you should have a sense of responsibility and not be afraid to take the initiative
? you must good computer skills and excellent input skills and speed, including during repetitive tasks
? you must be able to communicate well in Dutch and English, both verbally and in writing
? you should have the ambition to further develop yourself to become a (Senior) Metadata Specialist.

Finally, the following core competences are important: accuracy, a high learning capacity, an ability to work with others, and initiative.

Conditions of employment

In accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities, we offer the following terms of employment:

? depending on your qualifications and experience, a salary of a maximum of € 3,336 (salary scale 7) gross per month, with perspective towards a maximum of € 4,257 (salary scale 9) gross per month once you have developed to become a Senior Metadata Specialist, based on a full-time appointment. The corresponding UFO profile is MBS-1
? an 8% holiday allowance and an 8.3% end-of-year bonus over the annual gross income
? a contract of 0.8-1.0 FTE for a period of one year. After eight months, a performance appraisal will be held and, if this is positive and suitability has been demonstrated, it may be possible to convert the appointment into a permanent one.
