The University Villages invites applications for two (2) Journeyman Painters to join their team on campus. The person assigned to this position will have good knowledge of the standard practices, methods, processes of materials, tools and equipment of the trade. Good knowledge of the properties and use of paints, varnishes, shellacs, fillers, epoxy, and other painting materials. Good knowledge of preparing wood, metal, plaster, cement, drywall, and other surfaces for painting or staining. Ability to mix match and harmonize contrasting colors.
The person assigned to this position will be responsible for the following tasks:
- Prepares wall surface for painting
- Mixes and matches paints, varnishes, enamels, lacquers and epoxy
- Applies paints and varnishes to exterior surfaces, interior surfaces
- Applies many types of finishes to furniture, other wood and metal equipment
- Erects scaffolding and ladders
- Traffic painting curbs, parking lots and street striping
Required Skills
- Preparing wall surfaces for painting

- Apply paints and varnishes to exterior surfaces, interior surfaces
- Apply many types of finishes to furniture, other wood and metal equipment
- Erects scaffolding and ladders
- Ability to exercise sound judgment and maintain a safe work environment; work effectively in a team environment; create and maintain a work atmosphere of trust and respect with all team members.
- Knowledge and ability to provide quality customer service through effective and accepted quality methods and processes. Demonstrated ability to effectively work with a variety of diverse groups of individuals.
- Traffic painting curbs, parking lots and street striping
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
- Good Communication skills within the paint shop and other trades
- Strong communication skills including the ability to write clear and concise reports and correspondence
- Must have a proven ability to interact effectively with many levels of personnel
- Drywall tape and texture experience
Physical Requirements
(Qualified candidates must be able to meet minimum requirements and perform the primary functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.)
- Lifting: Ground to 36 inches, up to 60 lbs.
- Carrying: Front carry up to 60 lbs. for 100 feet or less.
- Right and left hand carry up to 75 lbs. for wheelbarrow handling.
- Pushing and pulling forces required (pushing and pulling materials, and during the use of tools): 100 lbs. sustained.
- Repetitive squatting on both even and uneven surfaces.
- 2-minute overhead work from various positions (standing, crouching, or kneeling) with 5 lbs. in one hand.
- Static forward bending from a standing, crouching or kneeling position while using tools.
- Trunk rotation from a standing or kneeling position.
- Balancing when climbing and working on a ladder.
- Walking various distances, continuously, throughout the day on even and uneven surfaces.
- Use of various grip circumferences and strengths as well as static grip positions during the use of various tools (4 1/2″ to 5 1/2″ circumference needing an average of 50 lbs. of grip force) and while manipulating various work materials (maximum 100 lbs.).
Physical Screen will be administered prior to a final offer of employment.
Minimum Required Experience
- High School diploma and two (2) years of directly related work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with vehicle and equipment painting

Position Title: Journeyman Painter

Department: Facilities Services – Maintenance
Work Schedule: Full-time, 1.0 FTE (40 Hours a week), Monday through Friday 7:30 am to 4:30 pm, 12 months/year.
Salary: $24.06/hr.
Union Affiliation: Maintenance Painters Union
Probationary Period: Six months minimum
