CBC North is looking for a journalist based out of the Montreal office to work on our weekly TV program, Maamuitaau .

Your role:

The journalist will work with a versatile team passionate about the language, culture and stories of the James Bay Cree. More specifically, the journalist will conduct interviews in Cree, transcribe recordings, write scripts, process sound and visual footage, and produce thorough, fact-checked, dynamic, compelling current affairs/news content for delivery across various platforms (TV, Digital). The journalist will present these stories on air in accordance with the Corporation’s Journalistic Standards and Practices.

For reference purposes, and at the time of this posting, the shift is Monday-Friday, 9:00 am-5:00 pm in the office.

Description of duties:

  • Be aware of and understand current events and stakeholders.

  • Be on time (for meetings, delivering scripts, making deadlines etc.)

  • Suggest story ideas/angles, and potential guests.

  • Research and review information, ideas, and audio files

  • Keep up with community contacts and various sources.

  • Recommend and select interviewees. Conduct pre-interviews. Prepare interview questions, approaches and scripts.

  • Conduct interviews in Cree, transcribe recordings, write scripts.

  • Process sound and visual footage

  • Follow up with the team before and during the program.

  • Suggest intros as needed.

  • Present said stories on air

  • Create and maintain files on upcoming stories.

  • Package content from said interviews for digital platforms

  • Record/edit voice-overs in Dalet

  • Work collaboratively with the team to ensure daily tasks are completed.

  • Carry out all other related tasks as needed.

Qualifications

We are looking for a candidate with the following:

  • A high school education or an acceptable combination of education and/or experience.

  • Relevant experience appropriate to television, community radio, current affairs or a newsroomenvironment.

  • Excellent general knowledge.

  • In-depth knowledge of current events as they relate to Cree communities, and the people living there.

  • Fluent in the working language (East Cree) and very good knowledge of English.

  • Knowledge of the French language would be considered an asset.

  • Knowledge of interview techniques and communications methods specific to TV as well as digital and radio.

  • Interest in honing skills related to digital journalism and open to learning newtechnology.

  • Strong familiarity with computers and social media.

  • Curious and engaging on-air personality and a strong affinity for and interest in theaudience.

  • Able to analyze, synthesize and think critically.

  • Able to work under pressure.

  • Leadership.

  • Willing to work flexible, irregular hours, depending on the assignment.

  • Availability to travel throughout Eeyou Istchee and beyond.

  • A valid driver’s license is an asset.
