Jock Clough Marine Foundation Oceans Chair

The University of Western Australia

The Oceans Institute at the University of Western Australia, one of the top 100 universities in the world and a member of the prestigious Australian Group of Eight research-intensive universities, has joined forces with the Jock Clough Marine Foundation to create the Jock Clough Marine Foundation Oceans Chair, an endowed Professorship for a leader in marine research, and the search has begun for the inaugural appointee.

Founded in 2010, the UWA Oceans Institute undertakes marine research programs and training in partnership with other research organisations, government bodies, industry, philanthropic partners and our community. Its goal is to deepen our collective understanding of marine environments, to make substantial contributions towards safeguarding their future, and to enable innovation that creates new opportunities for a sustainable environment and enhancement of the blue economy.

With the establishment of the Jock Clough Marine Foundation Oceans Chair there now is a unique opportunity for an outstanding marine researcher to lead amongst passionate colleagues of diverse disciplines but like minds in helping to meet the big challenges to the world’s oceans. The Chair could have a background in any relevant disciplines, from marine biology to marine landscape ecology and physical oceanography.

An ambassador for marine research outside the Oceans Institute, the inaugural Chair will have a flair for bringing together interdisciplinary teams inside it. The appointee will advance research of strategic importance not just to scientific discovery but to the marine environment itself and the community, government and industry that share it. The appointee will be expected to have an international reputation for excellence in their field. Bringing a record of high quality research outputs and grant success as well as experience in external engagement, this person will demonstrate the intellectual leadership to build and guide a joint agenda for research that combines the insights gained from inquiry across the Oceans Institute’s collective of talented colleagues and beyond.
