Joan M. Warburg Professor of International Relations

Position description

Simmons University invites applications for its Warburg Chair in International Relations, which will begin July 1, 2025 (the start date is negotiable). This is a two—to three-year appointment as a faculty member within the Department of Political Science and International Relations.

We seek a collaborative colleague with an enthusiasm for the field who will contribute to the teaching excellence and instructional innovation of the department and the University. The successful candidate is one of the following: either a distinguished scholar who has published widely in international relations, or a practitioner of international relations with extensive experience in foreign policy formulation at the senior level. The latter candidate does not need to have advanced academic qualifications in international relations or political science. Areas of expertise for either might include diplomacy, international trade, development, policy formulation and implementation, international organizations, international health, and/or international women’s issues.

Responsibilities include teaching four courses per year – generally an upper-level seminar and a subject-based course either designed by both the Warburg Chair and the Chair of the Department or an already-existing course within the Warburg Chair’s area of expertise. The Warburg Chair will also be responsible for coordinating discussion-oriented programs and meetings, mentoring students for careers in foreign policy, cultivating student opportunities, and bringing distinguished speakers to the Simmons community. Additionally, the Warburg Chair is expected to maintain a regular presence on campus as well as participate in activities that help advance the University’s strategic goals. Consideration of applications will begin March 1 and continue until the position is filled.
