Summary:

The IT Training & Communications Manager is responsible to provide for the planning, development, implementation and maintenance of information systems policies and programs required to maximize unit effectiveness, respond to the needs of students and staff, and support the University’s mission of teaching and research. They play a key role in ensuring IT projects meet objectives by increasing employee adoption and usage through the implementation of appropriate training and communications strategies and plans. Provide training and communications services related to business application, infrastructure and operations, customer support, information security including instructional development, Tier 2 help desk support for students, staff, and faculty for applications within their purview, and the delivery of Information Technology (IT) training workshops for the University community. Develop and implement information system strategies that support the needs of the University. Integrate information systems strategy and policy with the unit planning process. 

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Act as single point of contact for the various Business and IT Stakeholders for the scheduling, planning, and delivery of the training and communications activities under own responsibilities
  • Develop overall department objectives with the Director
  • Define roles and responsibilities for the unit
  • Work with the Director to manage resource allocation: material and financial, and establish the unit budget
  • Establish and manage unit deadlines
  • Coach employees to maintain quality standards
  • Support the IT Training & Communications staff to develop training and communications strategies/plans:
  • Support the design, development, delivery, and management of communications
  • Provide input, document requirements, and support the design and delivery of training programs
  • Exercise leadership in influencing others in attaining the established objectives.
  • Oversee the implementation of short- and long-term plans related to IT management
  • Work with clients to assess the degree to which IT investments are achieving their business objectives
  • Provide consulting expertise to the University community on a wide range of complex IT issues.
  • Support and advise the University community on introduction of new technology, including the creation and maintenance of resources such as the IT Knowledgebase, IT websites and other information and training resources.
  • Manage and/or support applications under the team’s purview, including LinkedIn Learning and other training and communications tools.
  • Review productivity reports of unit and evaluate process efficiencies and recommend improvements
  • Analyze and manage the HR and Finance functions to improve the economic performance of IT
  • Manage decisions on hiring and discipline and performance management
  • Perform annual Performance Dialogue for staff; provide coaching and motivation to direct reports and establish training and development plan. Determine performance ratings for teams
  • Foster and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues and clients.

Education: Undergraduate Degree

Experience: 5 years’ related experience

Skills and Expertise:

  • Demonstrated ability to manage and lead teams, and to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
  • Excellent communication, writing, documentation and planning skills.
  • Extensive functional knowledge of the role of IT training and communications
  • Proven-track record in the implementation, development and support of IT training and communications
  • Ability to develop strategies, estimates, plans for the development of communications and training content in the context of projects, initiatives, or campaigns.
  • Strong attention to detailsAbility to create assessments, assess and analyze user feedback / evaluation results in order to elevate IT training and communications standards and contribute to both your own and the team’s growth
  • Strong people skills including empathic verbal communication, patience and diplomacy; ability to work independently and with a team, fostering a collaborative environment.
  • Collaborative team player with strong focus on delivering results to meet the business needs.
  • Demonstrated understanding of current communication standards, particularly accessibility and usability
  • Demonstrated experience in working within various project management methodologies including, Waterfall and Agile methodologies
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills – ability to perform root/cause analysis
  • Demonstrated knowledge of functional analysis and information structures – ability to understand and clarify business needs formulated by requesters and stakeholders
  • Experience in working with third-party software and third-party suppliers.
  • Knowledge of the following would be an asset: PROSCI methodology, experience with design of instruction; delivery of training or presentations to groups; online course, survey or media content creation; strong graphic/photographic skills; and focus group facilitation.
  • Knowledge of French and English. McGill University is an English-language university where day to day duties may require English communication both verbally and in writing.
  • Knowledge of the higher education sector (an asset).

Annual Salary:

(MPEX Grade 08) $97,540.00 – $121,920.00 – $146,300.00
