IT Technician
at the Department of Neuroscience and Developmental Biology

The Department of Neuroscience and Developmental Biology consists of several research groups with a total of about 60 employees. Our activities involve working with IT applications, such as the analysis and management of large data sets for bioinformatics analysis on local workstations as well as on an HPC cluster. To support us in all IT matters, we are looking for a dedicated IT technician with the specified requirement profile.
Duration of employment: 1 year/s

Extent of Employment: 40 hours/week
Job grading in accordance with collective bargaining agreement : §54 VwGr. IIIb with relevant work
experience determining the assignment to a particular salary grade.
Job Description:
Your responsibilities include technical administration of hardware and software at the Department of Neuroscience and Developmental Biology. This includes the following tasks:
Independent and autonomous installation, configuration and maintenance work on the LiSC HPC cluster (https://lisc.univie.ac.at/) in close cooperation with the LiSC team. This includes the setup and maintenance of programming environments (Office, GIT, Matlab, Python etc.) and server applications (homepage, Git-Hub, storage etc.).
– User support at HPC cluster and local workstations.
– Administration of user permissions (account assignment, file system permissions).
– Optimization of work steps at the HPC cluster especially the management of large (terabyte-sized) data sets.
– Procurement and installation of hardware
– Warranty processing in case of hardware defects (fault reporting, supervision of external companies).
– Independent registration and handling of software licenses (software compliance)
– Technical support and further development of the web services (Content Management System).
– Revision and maintenance of the department homepage.


Profile:
– Graduation from a secondary school (Matura), relevant degree (e.g. HTL, BSc.)
– Professional experience in the IT field (experience in a university or scientific context is an advantage)
– Very good knowledge of PC, hardware and network technology
– Very good knowledge of system architecture and experience with system administration of operating systems and servers (Apple, Windows, Linux, programming with scripting languages – e.g. Linux Shell and Bash scripts)
– Expertise with IT administration and client hardware (notebooks, printers, server hardware).
– Know-how of IT infrastructure (TCP/IP networks, GIT, remote storage and applications).
– Very good knowledge of English (B2 level or higher).
