IT Assistant

About the role

The Faculty of History and Faculty of Philosophy are seeking an experienced and dedicated IT Assistant. The appointee will provide essential first- and second-line support across two Faculties (predominantly History), reporting to the IT Manager.

The successful applicant will play a crucial role within both faculties undertaking a broad range of tasks primarily dealing with general IT enquiries and desktop support as well as contributing to IT projects within the faculties.

The History Faculty supports around 200-250 PCs/Laptops/Macs across multiple sites (and in a couple of cases, countries). Our infrastructure includes Windows Server 2019 (Active Directory, File and Print Services) and Linux (Ubuntu/Debian) servers over differing hardware. We maintain HP networking equipment along with VOIP enabled telephony and we run multiple research project websites along with a few accompanying databases.

We have three physical sites for History, with equipment across all sites, including (but not exclusively) colleges, homes and other University buildings.

About you

You will also be able to demonstrate focus on responsive and reliable customer service, with a proven ability to triage incoming problems and work well under pressure and support users of word-processing, email, and general software packages.  Excellent communication skills, including the ability to communicate complex technical issues to experts and non-experts at all levels, are also essential.

You will have knowledge of server hardware, telephony (VOIP), and network switches (TCP/IP configuration) as well as of Windows client/desktop operating systems (from 7 and above) in a networked environment.  You will also have experience of at least one CMS (e.g. WordPress, Drupal) or experience of SharePoint.  Experience of editing large websites and/or virtual learning environments, and of maintaining online security is also essential.

Experience of working in a similar role within a large and complex organization is desirable as is familiarity with Windows Server/network administration and support.  A working knowledge of virtualisation technologies such as VMware ESXi, Hyper-V is also desirable as is knowledge of at least one relational database management system and Linux and Mac OS in a heterogeneous network environment.
