Job Summary
Serves as the IT Architect for hardware, operating systems, and network management. Works with various functional areas and divisions to improve process through technology usage. Management of departmental information infrastructure services including:
- Departmental data management systems for Pathology and clinical laboratory services
- Departmental Active Directory and servers
Planning, installation, maintenance, security management, and architecture of:
- Computer hardware, which includes servers, RAIDs, workstations, laptops, and all peripherals such as printers, backup devices, external drives, PDAs, digital cameras, scanners, slide scanners, etc.
- Strategic initiatives in the Department such as digital pathology, computational pathology, IS-3 requirements, remote and local users accessing interfaces
- Plans and coordinates the operational installation, configuration, security details and testing of hardware and software components. Plans and coordinates system integrations. Works with the following toolsets: Data Recovery Software, Disaster Recovery Software, System Vulnerability Scan Software, System Deployment tools, Platforms include: JAMF Mobile Device Management, Bomgar Remote Assistance, Acronis Cyber Protect, SLACK Workspace Administration, Intellipath, Microsoft Active Directory, ServiceNow, Apple MDM, Dell OpenManage, Supermicro IPMI.
- Work may involve central or departmental computer systems and networks. Includes web systems administration.
- Computer software, which includes Microsoft Office and Office Professional; Adobe graphics, web design, and document management applications; Reflection Suite; and various antivirus, anti-malware, and firewall applications.
This position will architect critical systems for current and future systems needs and assist the Pathology Computer Support Unit with providing IT support to the department’s operational units and work closely with the UCSF Desktop Support Team and UCSF IT Security Team.

3 days onsite, 2 days remote.
Department Description
The Department of Pathology is a major academic department in the School of Medicine, actively engaged in clinical, research and teaching activities, and is directly responsible for over 350 academic, student, and staff personnel at multiple sites (Parnassus, Mount Zion, China Basin, Mission Bay, MCB, SFGH and VAMC). The Department also has joint responsibility with the Medical Center in overseeing Pathology clinical operations which consists of: Surgical Pathology (Gross-Cutting Labs, IPOX Lab, Histology Lab), Autopsy, Cytopathology, Neuropathology, Renal/EM Pathology, and Molecular Pathology. The Department also manages the independent Dermatopathology service. The Department provides clinical diagnostic services in Anatomic Pathology and Dermatopathology to the Medical Center, outside referring physicians and medical centers from around the world.
This position will work in the Department’s Computer Support Unit (CSU) and will be managing planning for current and upcoming IT Architecture Initiatives such as Digital Pathology and Computational Pathology, provide technical support, analysis of information security and maintaining the Department’s information technology systems at the Parnassus, Mt. Zion, Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital, Mission Bay, China Basin, and Veterans’ Affairs Medical Center campuses and various off-campus sites.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
- Three years of experience in desktop support and systems administration or an equivalent combination of experience and education.
- Knowledge of software, database, infrastructure or other IT function. Knowledge relating to the design and development of software across the organization.
- General knowledge of other areas of IT. Thorough understanding of and experience with systems-related issues and actions that can be taken to improve or correct performance.
- Knowledge of other related areas of IT. Ability to apply department processes and procedures to work.
- Ability to understand business needs and how business systems can support those needs.
- Understanding of system performance monitoring and actions that can be taken to improve or correct performance.
- Self-motivated and works independently and as part of a team. Demonstrates problem solving skills. Able to learn effectively and meet deadlines.
- Skills in web software, web software language and object oriented software concepts. Knowledge of network protocols and how they are used on a large (campus / medical center / OP-wide, institution-wide or beyond) network. Knowledge of data storage, processing analysis and visualization technologies and how they are used in administrative and / or academic endeavors at a large, top-tier research university or medical center.
- Strong knowledge of Macintosh and PC-compatible computer hardware and peripherals required.
- May require skills in web software, web software language and object oriented software concepts. May require knowledge of network protocols and how they are used on a large (campus / medical center / OP-wide, institution-wide or beyond) network. May require advanced knowledge of data storage, processing analysis and visualization technologies and how they are used in administrative and / or academic endeavors at a large, top-tier research university or medical center.
- Demonstrated skills associated with adapting equipment and technology to serve user needs. Demonstrated comprehensive understanding of how system management actions affect other systems, system users and dependent / related functions.
- Demonstrated ability to work with others from diverse backgrounds.
- Demonstrated effective communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to communicate technical information to technical and non-technical personnel at various levels in the organization.
- Ability to elicit and communicate technical and non-technical information in a clear and concise manner.
