Position Overview

The University of British Columbia, Vancouver, invites applications for a part-time Sessional Lecturer position, which will be with the Faculty of Science Integrated Sciences specialization. Integrated Sciences is a flexible, highly interactive undergraduate program that allows students to design their own unique program of study, with an emphasis on active learning, group discussion, and collaborative research. The position will start January 1 2023 and end April 30, 2023.

The successful candidate will teach ISCI 434 Non Animal Methods in Biomedical Science (3 credits).

Course Description

Interdisciplinary non-animal methods (e.g., organoids, organ-on-a-chip, 3D bioprinting) for research, testing, and education; the regulatory landscape. [3-0-0]

Prerequisite: Third-year standing.

Summary of Course

This course will explore the emergence of non-animal methods for research, testing and education as well as the shifting regulatory landscape which requires that non-animal methods be developed and implemented.

Throughout the course students will explore emerging interdisciplinary technologies like organ-on-a chip, 3D bioprinting, and organoids, along with other more established non-animal methods, like cell-based assays, high-throughput methods, and adverse outcome pathways.

The intention of this course is to explore, a) how non-animal methods are developed, validated, and implemented, b) the emerging technologies that are being developed, and c) scientists’ responsibilities to contribute to the development and implementation of such methods, according to existing international guidelines, policies, and law. It is not the intention to debate the ethics of animal-based research, nor is it the intention to imply that animal-based science is morally unjust.

This course is intended for undergraduate students of third year standing enrolled in science programs. Intended number of students is 40.

Qualifications

Applicants must hold a Master of Science degree (PhD preferred) and must have demonstrated evidence of post-secondary teaching excellence and demonstrated interdisciplinary interests and experience. The following experience is required:

  • Experience with interactive, research-informed teaching methods and university-level writing courses.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills including co-teaching experience.
  • Supervisory experience (e.g., TA supervision).

The following experience would be considered advantageous:

  • Ability to draw upon multiple disciplines to analyze scientific problems.
  • Ability to teach at a rigorous level to a student population of diverse interests working in groups.
  • Promote interdisciplinary ways of thinking to allow students to develop new perspectives and apply knowledge and scientific tools in new contexts.
  • Incorporate current research topics to achieve an element of inquiry and an awareness of scientific literature, experimental design and socio-cultural relevance necessary to solve problems in any settings.
  • Intermediate to advanced experience with learning technologies, such as learning management systems (Canvas is UBC’s current system).
  • Data collection and analysis skills for educational research, with particular emphasis on qualitative approaches (e.g. surveys, interviews, focus groups, classroom observations).

Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience. The position is subject to final budgetary approval.

Applications should include:

(1) A cover letter that addresses how the applicant meets the criteria for the position and how the applicant anticipates approaching the teaching duties.

(2) A Curriculum Vitae that includes the names and contact information of referees.

(3) A statement of teaching philosophy including information related to interdisciplinary teaching.

(4) Evidence of teaching excellence and experience (please include teaching evaluations and course syllabi for university-level courses developed, taught, or supported).

Application documents should be compiled into one PDF and sent to Mary Anne Lyons at lyons@science.ubc.ca

Deadline for applications October 15th, 2022.
