Since 2007, IRC has worked with refugees and other vulnerable populations in Jordan focusing on urban and camp interventions addressing health, protection, economic development, and early childhood development for Syrian refugees and host communities. IRC through its health program has been providing essential Primary and Reproductive Health (RH) services to Syrian refugees and vulnerable host communities in Jordan.

Job Overview/Summary:

The Internal Medicine Doctor (Internist) will support the IRC Primary Health Care (PHC) team in Za’atari Camp by providing high-quality outpatient consultations for adults with non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and other chronic medical conditions.

The Internist will provide comprehensive diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up care for patients with chronic illnesses, including diabetes mellitus, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, dyslipidemia, chronic respiratory diseases (asthma/COPD), thyroid disorders, and other stable internal medicine conditions. Clinical management will follow MoH, WHO, and IRC protocols and include treatment planning, medication optimization, routine monitoring, patient education, and referral of complex cases.

The role also includes maintaining accurate clinical documentation, ensuring timely data entry into the Health Information System (HIS), supporting clinical quality improvement activities, and promoting prevention and self-management of chronic diseases.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide outpatient consultations for diagnosis, follow-up, and treatment of non-communicable diseases (NCDs), in accordance with MoH/WHO/IRC protocols.
• Manage and monitor chronic cases, including medication adjustment, routine follow-up, and prevention of complications.
• Deliver structured patient education on treatment adherence, physical activity, smoking cessation, and self-management of chronic conditions.
• Ensure sound prescription practices and medication reconciliation for chronic patients, including refills and dose optimization.
• Support NCD screening and monitoring activities as needed.
• Identify complex NCD cases and coordinate referrals for specialized care, ensuring referral outcomes are tracked and documented.
• Ensure accurate documentation of medical consultations, follow-up plans, prescriptions, and referrals in the Health Information System (HIS), including same-day data entry where possible.
• Participate in clinical supervision, mentoring, and case discussions with PHC staff to strengthen the quality of chronic care services.
• Prepare regular activity reports and support coordination meetings and quality improvement initiatives related to NCD services.
• Conduct clinical risk stratification for NCD patients to prioritize follow-up frequency and identify patients at higher risk of complications
• Support the maintenance of individual chronic disease follow-up plans/registers to track patients over time and reduce loss to follow-up.
• Collaborate with the Doctor of Pharmacy to ensure the availability and appropriate use of NCD medications, and flag anticipated supply needs in advance.
• Support General Practitioners (GPs) with outpatient consultations as needed.
• Provide internal medicine consultations and technical input to other specialties as needed, supporting comprehensive patient care where cases fall outside their primary scope of practice.
• Any other tasks requested by the line manager.

Representation and Coordination

• Represent the PHC/NCD team in coordination meetings, health activities, and service delivery events, as assigned.
• Participate in patient engagement and community feedback activities related to NCD service quality and accessibility.
• Liaise with community health workers and outreach teams to support follow-up of patients who miss appointments or discontinue treatment.

Reporting and Monitoring

• Maintain accurate, complete, and up-to-date patient records in the HIS in accordance with IRC standard operating procedures.
• Monitor and document patient follow-up, including appointment adherence, medication continuity, treatment adjustments, and referral outcomes.
• Support monitoring visits, internal reviews, and quality improvement activities related to medical services.
• Immediately report critical issues, including safeguarding concerns, suspected fraud, data discrepancies, and serious incidents, in accordance with IRC policies.

Job Requirements:

Education: Medical degree (MD) with specialization/board certification in Internal Medicine; valid license to practice medicine in Jordan.

Work Experience: Minimum 3 to 5 years of clinical experience as an Internal Medicine physician, with demonstrated experience in the management of non-communicable diseases (diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular risk, chronic respiratory disease, etc.).

Demonstrated Skills and Competencies:

• Strong clinical knowledge of chronic disease management, including diagnosis, treatment planning, and long-term follow-up of NCDs.
• Familiarity with MoH/WHO clinical protocols and treatment guidelines for NCDs.
• Knowledge of Health Information Systems (HIS) and experience with clinical documentation and data entry.
• Ability to work independently and manage a high patient caseload in a primary health care setting.
• Strong clinical judgment and decision-making skills, particularly in identifying and referring complex cases.
• Experience or willingness to provide clinical mentorship and case-based supervision to PHC staff.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build trust and rapport with patients from diverse cultural backgrounds.
• Ability to work collaboratively across specialties and support colleagues (GPs and other specialists) with internal medicine expertise
• Basic computer literacy, including Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook
• Fluency in Arabic required; working knowledge of English required.
• Ability to work effectively with refugee and vulnerable host community populations, with cultural sensitivity and a non-discriminatory approach
