IOM: VN Mobility: Research Officer (World Migration Report) (P) – Geneva

JOB DESCRIPTION

Job Summary

IOM, UN Migration Agency in Geneva, Switzerland is looking for a Research Officer (World Migration Report) who will mainly work on the development, design, preparation, and coordination of the World Migration Report (WMR) series.

Key Responsibilities

    Support and assist the Research Unit Lead (as part of the editorial team of IOM’s flagship World Migration Report series) with development, design preparation and coordination of WMR, including with internal and external contributors.

    In close coordination with the editorial team, draft key parts of WMRs utilizing relevant data and other sources, co-author thematic chapters of WMRs, participate in the data checking of WMR chapters (together with other team members), provide any additional research/data/information to support the various WMR chapters, as required by the supervisor.

    In close coordination with the Research Unit lead, contribute to the development and update of the WMR interactive and the WMR toolkits.

    Support WMR dissemination, communication and outreach activities, such as the WMR webpage, social media content, video podcasts, info sheets, translations, media briefings, events such as report launches.

    Support the development of online knowledge management tools and resources, support the production of WMR webinar series, and encourage their use by IOM staff in Headquarters (HQ) departments, Regional and Country Offices (ROs and COs).

    Support the provision of technical guidance to ROs and COs in the design, development, management and finalization of migration research outputs.

    Assist in writing, proof-reading, editing and formatting research products (factsheets, snapshots, articles, research reports, etc.) to enhance the use of rigorous migration research and data sources (IOM and non-IOM).

    Assist in organizing and supporting relevant internal information/knowledge sharing activities for colleagues on research, to facilitate learning and continuous improvement of IOM’s migration research capacities.

    Undertake duty travel as required, including to support WMR promotion and dissemination activities.

    Perform such other duties as may be assigned.

Required Qualifications

Education

  • Master’s degree in Migration Studies or other relevant Social Sciences (International Relations, Development Studies, Humanitarian Affairs, Political Science) or a related field from an accredited academic institution with two years of relevant professional experience; or,
  • Bachelor’s degree in the above fields with four years of relevant professional experience.

Accredited Universities are those listed in the UNESCO World Higher Education Database.

Experience

    Demonstrated experience in writing papers, briefings, articles, etc. on migration (a publishing record is an asset);

    Experience in conducting research on migration, and capacity to present research findings in various events to diverse audiences;

    Demonstrated experience in explaining complex information and data on migration topics in both internal and external settings; and,

    Demonstrated experience in collaborating with other teams and external partners to achieve common goals.

Skills

    Excellent research, writing, communication and analytical skills, including a record of publishing on aspects of migration in policy and academic contexts;

    Excellent communication skills and drafting abilities in English (oral and written); ability to prepare clear and concise reports, with a strong attention to detail and quality.

    Experience drafting and presenting in other IOM official languages will be considered an asset;

    Team-oriented, but with capacity to work independently and with minimal supervision;

    Personal commitment, efficiency, and flexibility;

    Demonstrated organizational and time management skills, and ability to deliver under tight timelines;

    Demonstrated understanding of migration issues, including in a variety of geographic locations; and,

    Good level of computer literacy.

Languages

IOM’s official languages are English, French, and Spanish. All staff members are required to be fluent in one of the three languages.

For this position, fluency in English is required (oral and written).

Working knowledge of French and/or Spanish is an advantage.

Proficiency of language(s) required will be specifically evaluated during the selection process, which may include
written and/or oral assessments.
