Investigation of the biological behaviour and genetic regulation of rare cancers, to develop new therapies.
University of Sheffield
About the Project
We are an active research group investigating ocular tumours, sarcomas, and have an interest in thyroid cancer. Currently we have five PhD students who are in various stages of their study.
Ocular tumours and sarcomas are rare compared to the more common cancers such as breast and colon. They represent an under researched area and are considered as cancers of unmet need. Genetically they have distinct changes, for example uveal melanomas (a form of eye cancer) tend to have simple karyotypic alterations, whilst many sarcomas have complex genetic backgrounds with a high level of genetic instability. This project will look at how specifically the individual genetic changes of these rare tumours combine together with environmental influences to alter tumour behaviour. We also have an interest in how cancer stem cells may be involved and whether this affects the development of resistance to treatment and metastases. The project will combine a number of methodologies including standard techniques such as immunocytochemistry, western blotting and sequencing. We also have a keen interest in the development of better models of rare cancers. We intend to use these models to facilitate the translation of new therapies, and are testing new treatments for a targeted approach to treatment.
