Massey University is seeking a motivated and talented PhD candidate to undertake research in proteomics with the AgResearch Smart Foods & Bioproducts Group. The PhD project is part of a multi-institute programme investigating the generation and characterisation of plant-based food ingredients.
The aim of the project is to gain a better understanding of protein quality and the extent of protein modifications that occur during dry and wet processing of pea and oat ingredients. New methods and discoveries will help to predict and control damage to proteins, identify biochemical and physiological synergies with other constituents, and guide applications for novel ingredients. The student will utilise and develop cutting-edge proteomics workflows focusing on protein modification during food processing, alongside bioinformatics methods. The research results will contribute to mathematical models and digital twins of sustainably designed manufacturing.
The project scholarship provides a tax-free stipend of NZD$35,000 per annum in addition to tuition fees and research costs. The student will be enrolled at Massey University and the research will primarily be undertaken at AgResearch in Lincoln (Christchurch, NZ), with opportunities to work with collaborators at Massey University and the Riddet Institute (Palmerston North, NZ), and the Leibniz Institute for Food Systems Biology (Germany). The student will be under the joint supervision of Dr Sharon Henare (Massey University) and Dr Evelyne Maes (AgResearch), and researchers from the project team.
