Working arrangements: Full-time (35 hours per week). We are undertaking a hybrid pilot looking at how best our staff can work flexibly and on and off campus. This post involves a significant amount of independent international travel and some evening and weekend work.

The Role and the Department 

The International Office is responsible for:

  • The recruitment of international students to all areas of the university to meet institutional targets
  • Supporting and managing the developing of international partnerships to raise the University’s global profile and to support academic colleagues in developing international links and collaborations
  • Managing the university’s student mobility programmes (Erasmus+ and other exchange partnerships) to meet the University’s student mobility target.

The International Officer will support all aspects of the delivery of the University’s Global Strategy, with particular responsibility for the achievement of international student recruitment.

With support from their line manager and International Office colleagues, the post holder will develop and disseminate expert knowledge, to assist the University’s relationship management in market. Market responsibilities may change over time in line with the external student recruitment landscape and the priorities of Durham University, so although the intention is that the post-holder will focus on activity across Europe, UK and the Gulf, we would be looking to appoint someone with an openness to global travel.

Essential Criteria

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to develop effective working relationships, both internally and externally.
  • Strong digital competence with demonstrable skills in using core digital tools including internet, email, digital communication tools, Microsoft 365 applications, digital booking system, project planning, financial systems.  
  • Educated to degree level or equivalent experience. 
  • Experience of delivering presentations
  • Evidence of personal development to maintain skills.
  • Experienced service provider with knowledge and expertise used to contribute to the delivery and development of services, events and activities within the organisation.
  • Demonstrable ability to provide advice and guidance to a range of customers and colleagues.
  • Experience of implementing policy and procedures and involvement with future changes for a service area.
  • Ability to solve problems as part of a team and resolve issues, plan solutions and make pragmatic decisions. 
  • Ability to effectively network and exchange advice and information for development purposes.  
  • Ability to contribute to planning at operational level. 
  • Experience of working, studying, or living overseas, or of significant independent travel.
  • Desirable Criteria

  • Experience of providing relevant specialist advice and guidance to a range of customers and colleagues, including more senior colleagues. (This could be within a recruitment, marketing, admissions, alumni relations, immigration or academic function).
  • A good understanding of the global higher education environment. Knowledge of and enthusiasm for a wide range of issues relevant to international students contemplating study in the UK.

    Service Delivery
    •    Specialist support with problem solving and query handling.
